Friday 05.04.2019 - Kalhovd - Helberg
Penultimate stage of this crossing in the Hardangervidda Natural Park. Coinciding with us on Kalhovd, a group of young Englishmen from some Royal Navy academy, with their instructors. Young people ... And somewhat presumed: they speak loudly, greet when they are wrong, with an arrogant attitude. Talking at night with the instructors, they explain to us that we all follow the same route and that we will all, therefore, coincide in Helberghytta the next day. A free shelter, with groceries, but with a limited capacity for 16 people. They a group of twelve and we who go seven, means that three are going to have to sleep on the floor! Apart from 16 berths, Helberghytta has 16 extra mats. In these cases, the federated members of the DNT have priority.
The next day, a large concentration of skiers is located just below the shelter, at the exact point where the great lake of Kalhovd begins. We recognized yesterday the route for our ascent to Mount Haraldshovde and quickly, our small group gets underway. We go up the slope that faces the refuge to the south and pass near the Vøgårhovde repeater, at the height of 1,260 m. The weather is clement and we are moving at a good pace on the descent that leads to Lake Reinstjønni. We turn to Mount Haraldshovde in the east and follow the great esplanade that constitutes Lake Haraldsjå to the southwest. After a few kilometers we reach the small town of Strengen. After the village, at the level of the dam, we continue on the east side towards the Øvre Grottetjønn where we find a small bridge over the Nedre Strengetjønn. We have to take advantage of the plain: a first slope on the slopes of the Flottenuten, until the mouth of the Skånevasstjørnan, takes us to the Skånevatn hut (1,135 m) and from there the long ascent to the Ljøstjørnnuten pass, at the height of 1,237 meters. The climb is pleasant, with spectacular views over the mountain and the valley at our feet.
The rest of the day is all downhill: from the Ljøstjørnnuten hill to the Ljostjønn lake (1,204 m), from the Ljostjønn to the Butjønn lake (1,137 m) and from the Butjønn to Helberghytta (1,095 m). From the small balcony overlooking the refuge, above the valley, we see how the last occupants move south, towards Rjukan. When we arrived, we found the two shelters that make up Helberghytta closed, the second of these, the largest, with the oven still hot. The history of the famous resistant and saboteur of the DNT, Claus Helberg, as well as the events that occurred during the episode of the Battle of Heavy Water , the spring of 1943, are collected on the walls of the refuge. In 1965, these facts gave birth to the Anthony Mann movie: The Heroes of Telemark ).
