Saturday 06.04.2019 - Helberg - Krossobanen Gondola (Rjukan)
Last stage of this crossing in the Hardangervidda Natural Park, by far the shortest and simplest of the route. Initially, the planned itinerary was to follow the Våervatn shore to its mouth (1,077 m) and then follow the Våerae to the height of Kringlehovda. From there, turn west to the track that goes down to Våeråstaul, Grendalen, Nystaul and Hjerdalen (900 m), to finally go down the road to the Rjukan fjellstue hostel (850 m). Unfortunately, people who went up from the valley to the Helberg shelter informed us that due to lack of snow at this time of year, they could not ski beyond Grendalen or Nystaul, with the consequent obligation to carry skis and pulkas down to the shoulder. For this reason, we decided to follow the road to Gvepseborg (902 m) and from there, take the cable car down to Krossobanen (Rjukan, 465 m).
We will finish the journey as planned in the comfortable Rjukan fjellstue, of the DNT.
Note: If you have a few hours of rest in Rjukan, do not miss the visit of the Vemork power station, theater of the heavy water episode of February 27, 1943. The production of nitrogen fertilizers by Norsk Hydro and the history of heavy water During World War II they are the two central elements of the history of this plant (see the story about the Battle of Heavy Water and the film directed in 1965 by Anthony Mann: The Heroes of Telemark ).
