Itinerary description
Pic d'Estats (highest peak in the Eastern Pyrenees) is a magnificent ski peak. If you are lucky enough to have snow to the car park, you have a 2000 metre descent, most of it superb ski country. The views from the summit east and west along the range are gorgeous. We combined Estats with Montcalm, another 3000m peak close by.
You can do the peak in a day (2000m ascent, expect icy conditions early in the morning and bring ski crampons and boot crampons) but we spent a night in the winter room of the Refuge de Pinet, helpful situated halfway up. The winter room sleeps 15, has comfortable mattresses and lots of blankets, and a beautiful terrace. It is free to use.
We had to bootpack the last 30 vertical metres of Estats and the first part of the climb from the col up the ridge of Montcalm. The rest was done on skis.
