Itinerary description

Very easy 1st day route. It may serve to familiarize you with the safety standards in Glacier, adjust your material, get used to skiing with the heavy backpack, learn the proper techniques for progression both on glacier and on randonnée skis (for some it's time to learn to perform conversions !!!)

Rendez-vous at the bottom of the “Domaine des Grands Montets”. You’ll have to take the “Téléphérique des Grands Montets” gondola to the top at 3275m. For that, I recommend you buy the “only téléphérique” ticket to save money.
For those who want to try their safety material (avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel) there’s a security area at the mid station.

Once you get to the top of the gondola, take the “Point de vue” slope to get through the Rognons Glacier for a few meters then quit the marked trail to cross the Argentière Glacier. You are now entering the backcountry where there are no marked, patrolled or groomed trails. Attention!! Crevasses!!

(Keep in mind that the path marked by the GPS is now an indication. You must adapt your own path to the snow, glacier and weather conditions, or any other factors which may affect the safety of the route.)

Finally, a very easy uphill will bring you up to the Refuge d’Argentière (2771m). Renovated in 2008, it’s the meeting point for many climbers seeking to ascent the many north faces located near the refuge (Mont Dolent(3823m), Aiguille de Talèfre(3870m), Aiguille Verte(4122m) etc…)

Sleep well, the adventure begins the next day !!
