Itinerary description
Chemin de la Côte/Vélodyssée Bayonne - Royan
The Vélodyssée is a cycle path along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean from Brittany to Spain. The Chemin de la Côte is a Way of St. James from Royan/Pointe de Grave to Hendaye.
Because there was work in the forests in 2023 after the 2022 forest fires, a large part of the Chemin de la Côte was closed and both hikers and cyclists had to rely on the route of the Vélodyssée. Fortunately, cyclists can still rely on the infrastructure of the Jacobsweg for overnight stays because the paved roads were not closed.
In addition to my Garmin GPS, I used the paper guide of the Vélodyssée
One of the variants of the Sweerman cycle route runs after the Bay of Arcachon together with the Vélodyssée.
In Royan the cyclist can continue north either via the Vélodyssée along the coast or via the Way of Saint James towards Saintes, Tours, Chartres and Compiègne (Sweeerman route)
My stages were
1 Bayonne - Mimizan 114.0 km - Ascent 349 m
Refuge Pelerin de l'Association "Pieds et Coeur au Chaud"
2 Mimizan - Sanguinet 53.5 km - Ascent 66 m
Short Stage due to illness
Refuge Pèlerin of the parish - Keys at the Office de Tourisme
3 Sanguinet - Maubuisson 87.2 km - Ascent 385 m
Camping Maubuisson
Ferry between Arcachon and Cap Ferret across the Bay of Arcachon (6.5km)
4 Maubuisson - Pointe de Grave - Royan 69km - Ascent 290m
Ferry between Pointe de Grave and Royan over the Gironde river (6.7 km)
(Overnight stay 44km further in Saintes on the Way of St. James)
