Monasterio de Santa Faz

According to tradition, Veronica, a pious woman, who had pity on the suffering of Jesus when he wore the cross, offered him his veil to clean his bloody face, that face that was engraved in the three folds of that veil. The relic remained in Jerusalem until the 6th century, when the first Muslim invasions began and the Christians, for fear that it was desecrated, moved it with other relics to the island of Cyprus Later on, they were taken to Constantinople, in search of a safer place, being deposited in the Church of Saint Sophia, where the holy veil was exposed to the worship and veneration of the faithful. In 1453, Constantinople was taken by the Turks and, according to tradition, the Emperor's sons fled to Rome, carrying with them several relics, including that of the Holy Face, that they delivered to the Pope. Years after, there was a tremendous epidemic in Venice and the Pope sent them the relic of the Holy Face, and the epidemic was soon extinguished. It has been considered as a miracle. Later, a monk of Alicante, travelled to Rome and was ordained Priest of San Juan, a Cardinal separated the veil and gave him one of the sacred folds. On the way to Alicante, the miracles continued. The priest deposited it in the bottom of an ark. Sometime later, upon opening the ark, he found the relic spread out and placed on top of the clothes that covered it. This fact repeated several times on his trip to Alicante In the year of 1489, on the occasion of a severe drought, it was thought to organize a procession and carry the Santa Faz canvas. This procession was organized from the town of San Juan to another local church. After walking a quarter of a league, the priest who carried the Holy Face in his hands felt such weight in his arms that he could not hold them up and everyone present could see how a tear came from the right eye of the Holy Face. and flowed on the cheek. It was the last miracle. In this same place, in the year 1490, the monastery was built to protect the relic. In our days, one of those folds is in Rome, another in Jaén and the third, in the Monastery of Santa Faz in Alicante.

Cabo de la Huerta

Limiting the bay of Alicante to the northeast, the Cabo de la Huerta receives its name from the disappeared Arab garden and was formerly called l'Alcodre, from Arabic al-kodra "the green" . Geologically, the rocky substratum of the Cabo de la Huerta is constituted by yellowish sandstones deposited some 8 million years ago on a shallow marine continental shelf. It contains urchins, bivalves and also 100,000 year old fossils The Cabo de la Huerta also has a very particular and endemic terrestrial vegetation adapted to the characteristics of the environment, such as the sea daisy , the thin-leafed crown , or the sea fennel, the Senecio auricula and, above all, the evergreen alicantina. Concerning the marine vegetation, you can find Posidonia oceanica and some seaweeds. Posidonia is a plant endemic to the Mediterranean With regard to fauna, we distinguish species of coastal or marine birds such as the great cormorant, the Audouin gull and the black-footed tern. The urban pressure of the last 30 years caused the Cape to undergo an important transformation. Thankfully, some areas partially escaped the urbanization preserving its environmental value. Currently, the Cabo de la Huerta is considered a microreserve and is part of the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) of the Valencian Community proposed in the Natura 2000 Network (European Union).
