Itinerary description
Day 12 and 13 Beaugency to Chateauneuf-Sur-Loire
We took another rest day in Beaugency. This is a cute little town! Great breakfast at our hotel, big for France. Then off to tour the town. Stopped in the Château Dunois - Musée Daniel Vannier (N47.77789° E1.63369°) and checked out some great suits of armor. Then to the Église Saint-Étienne (N47.77718° E1.63349°). There is a plaque in the cathedral commemorating the citizens who died in the world wars. There are a large grouping of names from a single day, June 14, 1944. Apparently, an allied bomb strike on the bridge at the foot of the town missed the bridge and landed in the village resulting in many civilian deaths. Down to the river to check out the “re-built” bridge. Then a meander into the town square and stopped for a lunch at Laverie Mousse et Bulles (N47.77713° E1.63123°), a small wine bar specializing in local food, wine, and beer. We sampled the cheese plate and an excellent local craft brew.
Day 13 Beaugency to Châteauneuf-sur-Loire 62.7 km
Out of town and along a nice cycleway up to Orleans. A stop at the St. Croix d'Orleans (N47.90170° E1.90939°) and the tourist office in Orleans then on to our campsite. Stopped for the night at Maltournée Camping (N47.85648° E2.23186°) just across the river from Châteauneuf-sur-Loire. We walked across the bridge looking for dinner and came upon a food truck selling pizza and beer. Good enough for us.
