Itinerary description
Day 14 Châteauneuf-sur-Loire to Briare 62.2 km
First a stop at the Oratoire Carolingien (N47.84632° E2.26653°). The oratory at Germigny is a rare example of architecture from the Charlemagne era. Consecrated in 806, it was the private chapel of Theodulphe, advisor to Charlemagne, bishop of Orleans, and abbot of Saint Benoit sur Loire. A nice little chapel that was renovated in the 19th century but much of the original architecture is still visible. From there it was off to Sully-Sur-Loire to check out the Chateau. We stopped for a picnic lunch, with a half bottle of wine of course, just before crossing the bridge into Sully-Sur-Loire. Then into town for a coffee at a nice little restaurant (N47.76537° E2.37500°) near the tourist office. Then back to the Sully sur Loire Chateau (N47.76757° E2.37540°) for pictures. We did not tour the chateau, chateau burn-out is definitely setting in. On to Briare! The Pont de Canal Briare (N47.63149° E2.73518°) crosses over the Loire river on a bridge. So you have water on a bridge over water! That is just cool! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briare_aqueduct The Pont de Canal Briare allows the Canal latéral à la Loire to cross the Loire river enroute to the Seine. We will follow this canal for the next two days. On to Martinet Camping (N47.64164° E2.72549°) in Briare for the evening.
