ECO-CICLE RUTA 39: Ruta Dehesas de Sierra Morena. Etapa 1. Encinasola - Cañaveral de León

La ruta se inicia en la localidad de Encinasola muy cerca de la frontera entre Portugal y España, en el límite del Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche. El trazado atraviesa este interesante núcleo serrano, uno de los más apartados que existen dentro del Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, pero que cuenta con todo lo necesario para poder avituallarse. Ubicado en la frontera con Portugal y en la histórica comarca de “La Contienda” es un lugar perfecto para comenzar a explorar el patrimonio y descubrir los primeros atractivos en una travesía de estas características.
Desde allí, la ruta continúa por las solitarias carreteras, ideales para la práctica del cicloturismo, que conectan Encinasola con las localidades de las Cumbres (San Bartolomé, de Enmedio y Mayores). A su salida desde Encinasola y durante unos cinco kilómetros, la ruta prosigue en dirección SE por la carretera asfaltada que va en descenso hasta llegar a la altura del puente sobre el Arroyo del Sillo, donde se encuentra el cruce que conduce hacia Cumbres de San Bartolomé y donde la ruta gira hacia el Oeste. Este tramo que comienza se realiza por una vía con muy poco tránsito y un buen firme, magnífica para viajar en bicicleta. El continuo ascenso hasta Cumbres de San Bartolomé, confiere a la ruta interesantes panorámicas de las sierras circundantes, repletas de tupidas dehesas dedicadas a la cría del cerdo ibérico, animal del que se produce el jamón, el embudo y las carnes ibéricas que han hecho famosas a estas erras.
La ruta, avanza por la travesía del pueblo, continuando hacia Cumbres de Enmedio por la misma carretera, la HU­9105, siendo este tramo, hasta el cruce con la N­435, uno de los tramos más bellos de la sección. Se trata de un delicioso falso llano entre muros de piedra seca, jalonado por encinas centenarias, que aportan sombra y frescor, además de belleza, a los escasos kilómetros que conducen hasta la carretera nacional. Desde allí, la ruta continúa por la A­5300, una vía también asfaltada, aunque con mas anchura que la anterior y en ligero ascenso, que conduce hasta Cumbres de Enmedio primero, para luego continuar hasta Cumbres Mayores, el más alto de los tres pueblos, a unos 691 msnm. Los anguos castillos de la “Banda Gallega”, uno de los puntos patrimonialmente más atractivos de esta ruta, hacen acto de presencia en estos dos últimos pueblos. Cumbres Mayores es el pueblo que cuenta con más servicios de los tres, disponiendo incluso de un área de autocaravanas donde poder pernoctar.
Desde Cumbres Mayores, la ruta desciende hasta la estación de tren que conecta con Huelva, ya en la salida del pueblo. Desde este punto, el recorrido describe una pendiente en ascenso algo más dura (6%­10%) de unos tres kilómetros hasta el puerto que existe en dirección a Hinojales por la A­5300. El paisaje, se presenta más erosionado por la actividad ganadera en esta zona, con grandes aclarados forestales, que pueden divisarse con claridad desde el puerto (800 msnm), entre las constantes dehesas que presiden el horizonte. Desde este punto, la bajada es constante hasta Hinojales. En la rotonda de entrada a este pueblo, la ruta continúa en dirección Cañaveral de León, quedando Hinojales a la derecha y la ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Tórtola a la izquierda, un poco más adelante. El paisaje en este tramo es muy agradable, regado por diferentes barrancos que cruzan la carretera, uno de los cuales, el Barranco del Infierno, indica el final del descenso para volver a ascender hasta Cañaveral de León.
Cañaveral de León forma parte de la “comarca leonesa” que se extiende alrededor de la frontera que comparten en Sierra Morena las provincias de Badajoz y Huelva. Las repoblaciones realizadas con colonos leoneses que descendieron por la Vía de La Plata tras la conquista cristiana de estas erras, allá por el SXII, le otorgó el apellido “de León” a una serie de municipios que gozan de características culturales comunes desde aquellos tiempos.
Actualmente, Cañaveral de León es principalmente conocido por la enorme alberca de riego que preside su plaza mayor y que desde hace unos años se usa también como piscina de recreo durante el periodo estival.

The route begins in the town of Encinasola, very close to the border between Portugal and Spain, on the edge of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park. The route crosses this interesting mountain nucleus, one of the most remote that exists within the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, but which has everything you need to get refreshments. Located on the border with Portugal and in the historic region of “La Conteienda”, it is a perfect place to start exploring the heritage and discovering the first attractions on a journey of these characteristics.
From there, the route continues along the lonely roads, ideal for cycling, which connect Encinasola with the towns of Las Cumbres (San Bartolomé, de Enmedio and Mayores). Upon leaving Encinasola and for about five kilometers, the route continues in a SE direction along the asphalt road that goes downhill until it reaches the height of the bridge over the Arroyo del Sillo, where the junction that leads to Cumbres de San Bartolomé is located. and where the route turns west. This section that begins is done on a road with very little traffic and a good road surface, magnificent for traveling by bicycle. The continuous ascent to Cumbres de San Bartolomé gives the route interesting panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, full of dense pastures dedicated to raising the Iberian pig, an animal from which the Iberian ham, funnel and meats are produced. to these erras.
The route continues through the village, continuing towards Cumbres de Enmedio by the same road, the HU9105, this section being, until the junction with the N435, one of the most beautiful sections of the section. It is a delicious false plain between dry stone walls, dotted with centuries-old holm oaks, which provide shade and freshness, as well as beauty, to the few kilometers that lead to the national highway. From there, the route continues along the A5300, a paved road, although wider than the previous one and with a slight ascent, which leads to Cumbres de Enmedio first, and then continues to Cumbres Mayores, the highest of the three towns. at about 691 meters above sea level. The ancient castles of the “Banda Gallega”, one of the most attractive heritage points of this route, make an appearance in these last two towns. Cumbres Mayores is the town that has the most services of the three, even having a motorhome area where you can spend the night.
From Cumbres Mayores, the route descends to the train station that connects with Huelva, already at the exit of the town. From this point, the route describes a somewhat harder ascent (6% 10%) of about three kilometers to the port that exists in the direction of Hinojales on the A5300. The landscape is more eroded by livestock activity in this area, with large forest clearings, which can be clearly seen from the port (800 meters above sea level), among the constant pastures that preside over the horizon. From this point, the descent is constant to Hinojales. At the roundabout at the entrance to this town, the route continues towards Cañaveral de León, leaving Hinojales on the right and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Tórtola on the left, a little further on. The landscape in this section is very pleasant, watered by different ravines that cross the road, one of which, the Barranco del Infierno, indicates the end of the descent to go back up to Cañaveral de León.
Cañaveral de León is part of the “Leonese region” that extends around the border shared in Sierra Morena by the provinces of Badajoz and Huelva. The repopulations carried out with Leonese settlers who descended the Vía de La Plata after the Christian conquest of these lands, back in the 12th century, gave the surname "de León" to a series of municipalities that have enjoyed common cultural characteristics since those times.
Currently, Cañaveral de León is mainly known for the huge irrigation pool that presides over its main square and that for a few years has also been used as a recreational pool during the summer period.
