Itinerary description
The Guadiamar, meaning Prince of Rivers to the Moors, is the final great tributary of the Guadalquivir. From its source in the Sierra Morena it flows south through the Andalucian campiña and orchards before feeding its sweet water to the marshlands of Doñana. Throughout history, the waters of the Guadiamar have been used by the cultures of Tartessos, Phonecians, Romans and Moors.
In 1998 a tragic ecological disaster saw thousands of tonnes of toxic sludge pour into the river when a waste dam from mining activity upstream broke. Until that moment the Guadiamar had suffered from endemic environmental ignorance throughout the centuries. The disaster was a catalyst for change and after a multi million euro clean up operation, the river has been converted to a natural park, reforested and is now a protected green area.
Enjoy a flat ride along the banks of this natural space and contrast the cutting edge with the ancient; the largest solar energy plant in Europe and the ruins of a Roman bridge, once the only crossing point. The route can be customized and lengthened or shortened to suit your preference. It can be adapted to a full day excursion taking in the mountains and mining north, the agricultural plains and orchards of the centre, some historic villages and the marshlands of the south.
