Itinerary description
The circular route can be done in either direction, depending on whether you prefer the Itálica visit at the beginning or the end of the ride.
Includes a 7 km section on a rail trail, part of which is so rustic that the hard old dry remains of ancient sleepers are still a feature in some places. The Aljarafe is the agricultural zone to the west of Seville on a plateau and this ride is definitively agricultural. You will definitely see olive groves, fruit orchards and solar farms and depending on the time of the year you can see huge fields of sunflowers in bloom, cotton, wheat, melons, onions and artichokes.
Apart from the visit to Itálica you can also visit the XIV century Monastery of San Isidore del Campo, where monks were tortured and slaughtered in the Spanish Inquisition and where the first translation of the bible into Spanish was commenced in the middle of the XVI century. You can also cool down and wet your head if its hot at the Fuente del Albarquilla, domed relic of the Muslim period around 1000 years ago when the zone was known as Al Xerafe. There are lovely views north from the high points of the Aljarafe plateau. History buffs can also request an extension to visit the Bronze Age dolmens in the village of Valencina de la Concepción.
This route can be shortened to suit your needs, or expanded to be a long full day route.
