Itinerary description

The rail trail commences near the white village of Puerto Serrano on the banks of the Rio Guadalete. It is a spectacular route on a rail trail through a series of viaducts and thirty tunnels, the longest tunnel over 900 metres, for 36 kilometres to the spectacular white village of Olvera with its Moorish castle perched on a rocky crag above town. The trail follows rugged terrain and river valleys of the Sierra de Cadiz. En route you will see lush valleys, rugged ranges and no doubt the Griffin vultures gliding on the updrafts around the Peñon de Zaframagon. The rail trail terminates in the stunning village of Olvera where there are plenty of places to eat and drink before returning to Puerto Serrano.

The optional return route described here on the wikiloc link is slightly longer and hillier than retracing your tyre marks directly by rail trail, but follows a quiet country road through the Sierra de Lijar to the village of La Muela before rejoining the rail trail at the old Coripe station for the final stretch back to Puerto Serrano.

Note that there are errors in the altitud on parts of the rail trail because GPS location reads as the altitude on the land surface ABOVE the tunnel. The total climb on this ride is significantly less than stated in the ride specifications.
