Itinerary description
Desde Valencia, el pueblo de Mascarat está a unos 130 km, justo entre Calpe y Altea. Para aparcar, hay sitio a un lado de la carretera N-332 en dirección a Altea/Calpe, marcado en el track. También hay otro aparcamiento en caso de que el primero esté lleno.
La aproximación a la zona de los rapeles toma alrededor de 20 minutos. Iniciamos la caminata por un sendero hasta llegar al lecho del barranco y continuamos por este hasta alcanzar el primer rapel. El retorno lleva aproximadamente 30 minutos, con un tramo bastante empinado.
Las instalaciones del barranco son excelentes. Detallamos a continuación los rapeles:
Rápel 1: 3 metros (se puede destrepar).
Rápel 2: 4 metros.
Rápel 3: 8 metros (posibilidad de realizar un rápel guiado y combinar R3 y R4).
Rápel 4: 4 metros.
Rápel 5: 20 metros.
Es un barranco bonito, destacando especialmente el último rápel y la caminata bajo los puentes de Mascarat. Aunque es relativamente fácil y no presenta grandes dificultades, es importante tener precaución.
Advertencia: En caso de lluvia previa, pueden formarse marmitas de agua en el rápel 2 y, sobre todo, en el rápel 3. Por esta razón, se han instalado chapas para realizar un rápel guiado en el rápel 3. Se recomienda llevar una cuerda larga para realizar este rápel guiado, unos 50 metros diría yo.

🇺🇸 English: The Barranco del Mascarat, also known as Barranco del Salat, has a length of approximately 200 meters and is located in the town of Mascarat, between Calpe and Altea. This canyon has 5 rappels, the longest being 20 meters.
From Valencia, the village of Mascarat is about 130 km away, just between Calpe and Altea. For parking, there is a parking space on the side of the N-332 road in the direction of Altea/Calpe, marked on the track. There is also another parking in case the first one is full.
The approach to the rappel area takes about 20 minutes. We start the walk along a path until we reach the bed of the ravine and continue along this until we reach the first rappel. The return takes approximately 30 minutes, with a fairly steep section.
The canyon facilities are excellent. The rappels are detailed below:
Rappel 1: 3 meters (can be avoided).
Rappel 2: 4 meters.
Rappel 3: 8 meters (possibility of making a guided rappel and combining R3 and R4).
Rappel 4: 4 meters.
Rappel 5: 20 meters
It is a beautiful canyon, especially highlighting the last rappel and the walk under the bridges of Mascarat. Although it is relatively easy and does not present great difficulties, it is important to be cautious.
Warning: In case of previous rain, water can form in rappel 2 and, above all, in rappel 3. For this reason, anchor plates have been installed for a guided rappel in rappel 3. We recommend taking a long rope for this guided rappel, about 50 meters I would say.

🇺🇸 The second rappel is at the end of the first rappel. It has an anchor to make a handrail. The belay station is on the left hand side and there are two rings.
The rappel is 4m. Beware that at the end of the rappel a pool of water can form if there has been rain during the previous days.

Rápel 3 - 8m
🇪🇸 Este rápel se puede hacer de diferentes maneras. Al no tener mucha agua cuando lo hicimos nosotros, bajamos con un rápel normal, de unos 8m, cruzamos la marmita sin mojarse y llegamos al cuarto rápel. Se puede hacer también un rápel guiado, en caso de haber mucha agua. Hay instalaciones para ello. Allí hay que prever una cuerda más larga.
🇺🇸 This rappel can be done in different ways. Since there was not much water when we did it, we descended with a normal rappel, about 8m, crossed the water pool without getting wet and reached the fourth rappel.
You can also make a guided rappel, should there be a lot of water. There is equipment for this. A longer rope must be used for this.

🇪🇸 Último rápel de este barranco y sin duda el mejor! Unos 20m de bajada, unos metros estrechos entre las paredes del barranco. Al llegar abajo empiezas a ver los famosos puentes de Mascarat. La reunión está a mano izquierda y son dos anillas.
🇺🇸 Last rappel of this canyon and certainly the best! It's about 20m of descent, a few tight meters between the walls of the canyon. When you get down you start to see the famous Mascarat bridges.
