Itinerary description

Marking trail as Canyoneering as Wikiloc has no Ziplining Activity.

This recording is of the ever-popular Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour where you will find yourself zipping and sliding over some of the most incredible waterfalls on the Groot Letaba River. It is a highly recommended experience in my opinion and its conveniently located on route to the Northern sections of the Kruger Park when travelling from Johannesburg through Polokwane. Information, pricing and booking procedure can be found on the Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours Website (https://www.canopytour.co.za/locations/magoebaskloof ) at the time of writing. A big thank you to the guides and the company for a very memorable experience conducted in such a safe manor. Our very early Monday 11 March 2024 tour began with signing all our paperwork on iPads before getting a briefing session on how to proceed, where to hold, how to brake etc. Thereafter we descended towards the river where the ravine became more and more lush and views of the high escarpment peaks revealed themselves through dense cloud, truly remarkable but still a long way off from the tour’s main attractions. Reaching a first platform and being connected to the line marked the start of the official canopy tour with the first practice line leading over the trees to another platform a short way on. This first practice line was easy and it gets one all set for the braking that will be required as the tour progresses. The second line is a longer more advanced line which passes over a few rambling rapids to a platform on the same side of the Letaba, this line is more advanced but still gentle and allows one to admire the kloof and its surroundings. From here you can see that the level kicks up a notch with a much longer line coming up ahead. Line three involves a much longer and faster route to a platform placed on the ledge of a rock cliff. The highlight of line 3 is a massive waterfall which you pass right over before reaching the next platform, be sure to look down and back to admire flying over this feature. Platform 4 has undoubtedly one of the best views of them all and the waterfall views and the pool far below are sure to be the topic of conversation. Those with an aversion to heights might be a tad uneasy standing on this platform but its important to remember that you are clipped in with two safety lines at all times. Line 4 involves crossing the Letaba once again and right into the canopy through a narrow gap in the trees, here the vegetation is thick and tropical and the cover provides good shade. Line 5 is a rather long slide over a large calmer section of the river. You arrive at platform 6 on the same side of the river as platform 5 was (The Northern Bank of the Letaba). From here a short but faster line over to the Southern Side of the river once again over another much larger waterfall. The 7th platform on the other end is perched high on a rock ledge and here the drop will test those with an aversion to heights even more but the waterfall here is truly remarkable. Take your time and plenty photos at this spot. Leaving here is yet another long line over the river once again to another platform (8th) in the canopy. From here a short and fast line to the other side at platform 9 high above the river gorge. The next long and fast line continues on the same side of the river. Platform 10 is an interesting one as it requires you to almost run off the platform in order to create the speed needed to land at the platform on the other side, its lengthy and scenic above another smaller set of falls, but its slow so you will need all your pace to land on the 11th platform or else it will require pulling yourself the last way there. Platform 11 is perched high in a mountain cabbage or Kiepersol tree and from here it is a another shorth slide to the last platform where the walk up and out of the forest begins. If you are lucky like us the 4x4 with seats will be waiting for you, if not it might require a short but uphill walk back to the canopy tours building. Back at the tours building there are bathrooms, a bar, and a small restaurant which served burgers and fries, this was included in our tour (make sure about this when you book and do not assume that it will be included in your package). Great views from the balcony and after some time to relax it was on to the Kruger which only took about 2 hours to reach from here. Thoroughly enjoyed this activity on the beautiful Letaba Gorge. Definitely a must do if in the area!
