Itinerary description
On day 2 we drove the scenic 17 Mile Drive from Carmel up to Monterey, and then down south on CA-1 through Big Sur on a beautiful day. Of course, with some of the mandatory stops - but had to drop Limekiln State Park, a tour up to Hearst Castle and a stop in San Luis Obispo.
On day 3 we started from Pismo Beach, avoided some highways and drove to Solvang, then Santa Barbara and Ventura. We then switched from the CA-1/US-101 to the CA-126 to drive into Los Angeles from the north on the i5. With a little detour through Mulholland Drive, Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills on the way to our hotel in Venice. We dropped off our car at a small AVIS office in Venice Beach in stead of at LAX.
Some recommendations for those of you considering a similar trip:
- Avoid picking up a rental car at the airport if you can. When we arrived there was a long line and it took some 1,5 hours before we had our car.
- If going all the way from SF til LA, consider spending 1 or even 2 more nights on the way. Every stop along the road took more time than expected, and we had to skip some of our planned stops to arrive in reasonable time at our hotels. Cambria, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Solvang or Santa Barbara could be nice alternate or additional overnight stops.
- If traffic in LA seems overwhelming, a good option would be to drop off your car in Santa Barbara or even San Luis Obispo and take the AmTrak Pacific Surfliner into LA.
I have labeled this route as "Moderate" - while most of the route is very easy driving, the heavy traffic near San Francisco and Los Angeles may be overwhelming if you're not used to it.
Waypoints
San Francisco International Airport
We picked up our rental car at the Rental Car Center.
Google Bay View Campus, Mountain View
Drove into the area with a lot of Google buildings, and stopped by the new campus.
Apple Park Visitor Center, Cupertino
Basically just an Apple Store with a cafe, and an observation deck where you can see the top of the circular Apple head quarter at 1 Infinite Loop.
Henry Cowell Redwood State Park
We went here to make sure we would see some redwood trees on our trip. These are the largest and tallest trees in the world, and can live for thousands of years.. There's a small entrance fee (we paid $10 for one car with 2 people), but the area is very nice. Also, by taking this detour the road down to CA-1 in Santa Cruz was very nice through forests.
Hofsas House Hotel, Carmel
Peaceful and friendly place to stay over night in beautiful Carmel.
17 Mile Drive, Carmel to Monterey
We had several stops along the scenic 17 Mile Drive from Carmel up to Monterey. This is a private toll road which costs $11.25 (2022), which can be reimbursed in Pebble Beach restaurants. We skipped stopping in Monterey this time since we wanted to get on the road.
Bixby Bridge, Big Sur
This iconic bridge is a mandatory stop on the PCH. Good parking on the north-west side.
Nepenthe, Big Sur
Lunch with beautiful views. Also a Big Sur book and souvenir shop.
McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
The parking and the trail with an access tunnel to the observation point was closed due to landslides. We had to park further down the road and walk back, partly on a narrow shoulder of the road and partly outside the guard rail. Luckily there was not very much traffic, otherwise this could be dangerous.
Hearst Castle Visitor Center, San Simeon
When we planned this trip, Hearst Castle was still closed due to Covid restrictions. So we only planned to stop at this visitor center. When arriving, we could see buses taking tourists up to the castle, so I guess it recently opened. However, it was so late in the day that we didn't even consider trying to do that. Next time maybe. We hesitated about stopping and first drove to a parking spot along the road with a dozen of squirrels running around. They are not shy of people or cars so be careful if you take the same stop. After some pictures, we turned and went up to the visitor center, and then to the Elephant Seal Vista point some further miles back.
Elephant Seal Vista Point, San Simeon
Some miles north of San Simeon, so we almost missed this one, but turned and drove back. Many seals, but it looked like they all had an afternoon nap.
Quality Inn, Pismo Beach
Hotel along the way with a nearby giant shopping mall. Unfortunately, there is no easy walking access to the town center with the pier.
Pismo Beach Pier
We stayed the night in Pismo Beach, but there was no easy walking access from the hotel down here. So we drove down here before starting our journey on day 3.
Solvang
A little piece of Denmark in the Santa Ynez Valley in California. Also a good wine district with plenty of wine tasting opportunities.
Santa Barbara
Finally in Southern California, and the weather turned grey and temperature dropped from 30°C in Solvang to just 17°C here. We used a public parking close to the pier and walked around a little bit.
Ventura
Gas and sandwich.
Mulholland Scenic Overlook, Mulholland Drive
On some maps called "Hollywood Bowl Overlook", but the sign says "Mulholland Scenic Overlook". The official overlook and parking was closed, but we managed to make a stop anyway and get some misty photos of Downtown and the Hollywood Sign.
Universal City Overlook, Mulholland Drive
On Mulholland Drive with views over San Fernando Valley - North Hollywood, Studio City, Universal Studios, Burbank and more.
Jolly Roger Hotel, Venice Beach
Where we stayed 2 nights before flying home. Good value for money if you don't need to stay in Downtown LA or Hollywood. Also close to the airport LAX.
