Abbey of Stavelot

Bru is a sparkling mineral water used already in the seventeenth century by the monks of the abbey of Stavelot. They put in bottles and sold it as naturally carbonated sparkling water. Because of its lack of salt, Bru does not alter the taste of food. In the first century AD, Pliny the Elder was already talking about the mysterious sources of the Ardennes, probably also referring to this source.

L’ancienne abbatiale

Recent archaeological excavations have enabled the history of the abbey church, built in the 11th century and destroyed during the French Revolution, to be updated. The mainly 18th-century monastic buildings now house a museum dedicated to the poet Apollinaire, the museum of the principality of Stavelot-Malmedy and the Musée du Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, which traces the history of the motor-racing circuit and contains a remarkable collection of vehicles. Building and site listed by RD (24-12-1958) Building (with protection zone) listed by Ministerial Decree of the Walloon Region (20-07-1994) Listed as an exceptional heritage site of Wallonia

The organ in St Paul's church

The organ and organ case in St Paul's church were probably built by Dieudonné-Joseph Dell Haye (1725-1811), and Antwerp organ-maker whose uncle was a famous maker in Rotterdam. Characterised by a specific style, far from the "organ landscape" in Wallonia, the instrument, which is similar to small organ of the 18th century in the homes of the wealthy, is divided into two parts. The upper section has two doors protecting a façade of decorative pipes, as well as numerous sculpted elements. The lower part opens up with drawers. This part contains the bellows mechanism, made up of a wedge-shaped set of bellows. It also holds the ten register strings and 49-key keyboard. Capping this is a prominent cornice. Note that this exceptional little unit is genuine, with the exception of the keyboard, false springs, shutters that have been lost and some pipes. Listed: 29-03-1976 Exceptional heritage site of Wallonia (organ and case)

Eglise Saint-André

Following the damages of time and the Battle of the Ardennes in the winter of 1944-45, the old sanctuary, the first traces of which go back to 692, was destroyed and rebuilt at the beginning of the 1960s in the Neo-Romanesque style. On the exterior one will admire the beautiful dome-shaped bell tower and its four pinnacle turrets. In the interior, the choir with a circular apse opens onto a unique rectangular nave. Here the baptismal fonts from the 16th century have been kept, and under the altars of the aisles the shrine of Saint Andrew (17th century), and above all that of Saint Symetre (13th century). A beautiful example of goldsmithing work in the Rhineland-Romanesque tradition. Saint Symetre is a saint who is not well known (perhaps a Roman martyr) but as they say in Lierneux with humour, surely a very "great" saint… with a name like that… Two beautiful tombstones with coats of arms should also be noted in the chapel in the back.

Stolzembourg Castle

Stolzembourg Castle is located on a hill in the centre of the village of Stolzembourg in north-eastern Luxembourg. The current building was built on the ruins of the medieval castle in 1898 in the style of a Scottish country house.

In the 12th century, a tower was built to keep watch over the road along the River Our. The first mention of a fortress was in 1315. In 1454, the governor Antoine de Croÿ pulled down the castle. After it had been rebuilt, it was finally destroyed by the French troops of Louis XIV in 1679. In 1898, a Scottish-style country house was built on the ruins.

Troisvierges

Troisvierges is the start of the Vennbahn. The era in which the Vennbahn was the pulsing artery of industrial development and trade between the coal fields of Aachen and the smelters of Lorraine and Luxembourg is long past. This turbulent history began under Prussian rule, when Kaiser Wilhelm I. laid the cornerstone for the start of construction in 1882. By 1889 the Vennbahn line between Aachen-Rothe-Erde and Ulflingen (today's Troisvierges) could begin to carry traffic. The Vennbahn was a successful operation well into the 1920s, gradually losing importance as its incapacity for higher speed travel became a disadvantage and customs regulations between Germany and Belgium began to negatively affect trade. Nevertheless, the last goods trains still rolled on into the 1980s, until the line was converted as a tourist attraction in the 1990s. In 1990, after commercial rail traffic had been definitively discontinued at the end of the 80s, the German-speaking Community of Belgium (DG) purchased the section between Raeren and Bütgenbach to operate it as a passenger service tourist attraction. Unfortunately this venture soon proved financially unviable. Thus began a search for a new use and a feasible partnership, which eventually proved fruitful in Wallonia, where disused railways were already being converted into an ever more popular network of rapid cycle routes known as RAVeL. The plan for a German-Belgian frontier route was born, an idea which was greeted with enthusiasm by the local authorities and regional partners in both Germany and Luxembourg.
