Itinerary description

Are you in Korça and you would like to spend few hours out of the city? Going by car to Lozhan will pay off your efforts and you are definitely going to come back with a beautiful smile on your face out of this journey.

This will get one hour drive from Korça. You will have the chance to observe a former industrial city like Maliq and before reaching the remote and mountainous village of Lozhan you are going to enjoy the scenery and landscapes offered along the Devolli river.

It would be great to undertake such a trip in spring, summer and/or autumn so as to be able to see the greenery of willows, bushes and hazelnut trees.

The road quality from Korça to Maliq is very good. From Maliq to Lozhan is as well asphalt road but not maintained quite properly and it would be best to use an off-road car. You may do this with whatever the car type though. Last time my friends and I went to Lozhan (May, 2020) we were on a small car and we saw only three other cars passing in the same road we did.

On the way to Lozhan, once passing the Maliq city and its abandoned former mining infrastructures, you are going to meet drinkable water springs which are located on the left side of the road. Since the agricultural land is of little amount in this area, the main types of activities for the local community are livestock keeping, fishing, beekeeping and/or working into small industrial enterprises like pellet production, collection of medical plants, snails, mushrooms, etc.

When reaching the end of the trail, I'd recommend to spend some time under the shadows of the two old big Oak trees from where the view of the mountains is breathtaking. Scrolling around the two separate neighborhoods of Lozhan village you will not find it hard to see the beehives within certain houses. Please, don't hesitate to contact those families and buy some tasty honey, merged with the smell of the fresh air and the flowers of the mountains pastures of Lozhan.

If you are not prepared for having a picnic by the oak trees standing in the end of this trail, please don't hesitate to contact the local families for getting some food (bread, onions, garlic, butter, cheese) or having some coffee's or raki all together. You may even prefer to stop by one of the restaurants along the way, downhill.

This trail is managed best by car as well as hiking or biking. If you are a keen mountain hiker, Lozhan Village may be a starting point for walking further towards Opari's villages or Shipska and Voskopoja.

Peace, joy and love!

Former mining industry.

One may find dozens of abandoned mining infrastructures in Albania and particularly on the route that links Maliq - which was created as a city during dictatorship times (1945-1990)- to Lozhan, via the Gramshi direction. On this road, it would be worth to pay attention to various structures deteriorated through time and lack of maintenances. Those were part of the strategy to gain very important minerals and elements like Chrome, Nikel, Coal, from the soil, to be used for different chains of the nation's industry afterwards. They possess esthetic and historical value as a very interesting heritage with the potential to be used and transferred into other functions as well as to be cherished for educational purposes to the school children and to the advanced architecture and urban development students. -c- Lazjon PETRI -c- lazjon.petri@gmail.com

The view from Lozhan Village.

At the elevation of 1027 and 1028 meters above sea level there are standing two beautiful, huge and old oak trees of Quercus sp and a partisan's memorial for the fallen of the WWII. Those trees create a fantastic microclimate and a very reworded refreshness to organise a picnic under their shadows. It is so quite and the view is breathtaking. It is a wonderful place for yoga or/and meditation as well. If to arrive by car - this is the most feasible place for parking and turning it around backwards. It is recommended to get some warm clothes if you are planning to stay for long hours as the temperature might fall down quickly and sometimes the breaze turns immediately into a cold wind. - c - Lazjon PETRI - c - lazjon.petri@gmail.com
