Itinerary description

Saddleback road is a one lane dirt road featuring rocks, holes and water bars that I didn’t want to drive in the dark. The first part leaving 49 is in some of the worst shape but gets better. You don’t need 4WD to go as far as I did. A stock height SUV and extra attention worked but more ground clearance would allow going faster. The brush gets close enough to scrape in a some spots. I could have gone farther but I was intimidated by bigger rocks and water bars that mellowed out shortly after I parked. Next time I’d go 0.7 miles further to a parking area at the base of a rocky hill. Going past that all the way to the trailhead requires more ground clearance, 4WD and suitable tires to get up a hill of crumbly dirt on the return trip.
There is not much signage so a GPS track to follow is helpful.
