Itinerary description
Trinidadians and Tobagonians (Trinbagonians) seem to enjoy the idea of a “Sunday Drive” just as much as a “Beach Lime” or “River Lime” on a Sunday. This “Sunday Drive” starts in Iere Village just outside Princes’ Town at 10.28179°N and -61.30857°W. It heads along the Naparima-Mayaro Road into Princes’ Town. One of the most popular landmarks in the town is the old St. Stephen’s Anglican Church located at 10.27025°N and -61.37728°W. Originally founded as the Amerindian Mission of Savana Grande, the town was renamed after the 1880 visit by Queen Victoria's grandsons, Prince Albert and Prince George (later King George V). The Princes each planted a poui tree at this church that still survives to this day. They are located on the eastern and western end of the church yard. The town triangle is located at 10.27197°N and -61.37520°W.
From Princes’ Town we follow the Naparima-Mayaro Road back to the Tarouba Link Road at 10.28450°N and -61.42916°W. Turn heading 308° here. Then turn heading 43° at the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway entrance ramp at 10.29089°N and -61.43809°W. Just follow the highway north. I chose to exit at 10.60456°N and -61.42312°W at the Caroni exit ramp. This leads to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary as well.
Turn heading 80°onto Caroni Savannah Road. Along both sides of this road there are fertile rice fields where one can usually see lots of kites, hawks, and limpkins (Aramus guarauna ) feeding. Turn heading 8° at the roundabout located at 10.61604°N and -61.40609°W. Then turn heading 48° at 10.61984°N and -61.40648°W onto Tantrill Road. Along this short stretch of roadway you’ll also find a lot of kites, hawks, and limpkins (Aramus guarauna ) as well as various swamp birds feeding. Turn heading 3° onto Freeman Road at 10.62264°N and -61.39834°W. Then turn heading 285° at 10.63390°N and -61.39778°W onto Orange Grove Road. Turn heading 4° at 10.63443°N and -61.39937°W onto College Trace. This very short trace leads directly onto the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway heading East and West.
Turn heading 80° onto the Churchill- Roosevelt Highway and follow until Antigua Road. Then turn here heading 4° at 10.62970°N and -61.21962°W onto the Valencia Main Road. Follow this road and continue heading 120° at 10.65520°N and -61.20248°W into Sangre Grande. This hub in the east should be explored on foot.
Follow the previous route out of Sangre Grande. Take the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway heading west all the way into Port of Spain. From Valsayn this highway becomes the Beetham Highway. Port of Spain can also be explored on foot. The Beetham Highway East gets you back to Valsayn and then the Solomon Hochoy Highway south takes you back to Palmyra and then onto the Naparima-Mayaro Road back to Princes’ Town.
Happy Trails.
