Itinerary description

This driving trail is a MUST do for anyone interested in seeing the island of Trinidad from multiple angles. It is exceptionally easy to drive but best done using a 4x4 utility vehicle as most of the roads are in disrepair. This especially true of the Naparima-Mayaro Road all the way up to Mayaro. This road is heavily used by the large transport vehicles associated with the local hydrocarbon industry. At many points along the road you see evidence of heavy use and neglect. My advice is to get started early to escape the grid lock through some of the major towns on the path (Princes Town, New Grant, Rio Claro, Mayaro, Sangre Grande, Valencia, Arima, and Tunapuna). The drive along the Manzanilla Road and past the Nariva Swamp is exceptionally picturesque and you'd find yourself compelled to do quite a lot of stopping and photography. There are many areas along the entire east coast where you can park and get out and walk. You are able to walk along the entire stretch of the east coast on the beach at low tide. There are local vendors along the route selling local food, fruits, and drinks. This makes the trip quite the adventure as well. You are most certain to encounter Trinidadians making what`s locally called a "river lime" along many areas of this drive. This is basically a group of friends and family getting together spending the day cooking, eating, and drinking by a river. The area along the Manzanilla Road is quite popular for this type of activity, particularly at the mouth of the Ortoire River. You`d want to consider carrying a lot of water and sunscreen. Additionally, extra camera batteries and a memory card would prove helpful... Get out and enjoy this beautiful drive!
Happy Trails.

It's an easy drive but the traffic through some of the areas of the country can be annoying. I did enjoy the south and east coast scenery though!
