Itinerary description

This bike trip takes you along the Luxemburg-Belgian and Luxemburg-French border between Oberpallen and Hussigny and back. Highlights are the Attert cycling path, quiet, rolling hills with wide views in general, and the antique border markers. The outward journey takes you mainly through Luxemburg, and the return journey mainly through France and Belgium. In principle, the trip takes you on roads as close as possible to the border, but once and a while the border is crossed or more interesting roads are chosen. This trip is suited for the racing bike, with a short stretch on the busy N830, and a short footbridge on the dead-end cycling path near the tripoint. Also, the cycling path Itinéraire de la Côte Rouge between Hussigny and Saulnes is semi-paved but not difficult to negotiate on a road bike. At the start the route connects to another cycling route along the Luxemburg border to Benonchamps: https://nl.wikiloc.com/routes-fietsen/benonchamps-oberpallen-and-back-along-the-belgian-luxemburg-border-111-km-89255568/. You can find something to eat and drink in Beckerig, Clemency, Pétange, Rodange, Lasauvage, and in Steinfort just off-route.
At the start you can park your car along a busy road, just on the Belgian side of the border. You enter Luxemburg and ride to Oberpallen. Quiet country roads take you to Beckerich. From Hovelange you take the cycling path “Piste cyclable de l’Attert” on a former railroad. You will be taking this cycling path intermittently all the way to Pétange near the tripoint Belgium-France-Luxemburg. The cycling path takes you to Eischen and then on to Steinfort. Here you follow the cycling route around Steinfort to Kleinbettingen. Here you continue to Grass, partly directly on the border. Here, you pick up the cycling path againg which takes you first to Clemency and then on to Pétange. You first follow a cycling path on the edge of the village, but then take the major road to Rodange. Close to the French border you leave this major road and climb the Bois de Rodange. You descend to Lasauvage on the French border, in the Ruisseau de la Côte Rouge or Reierbaach valley. You climb out of the valley again, and the descend to Hussigny in France. Here you take a Voie Verte cycling path (Itinéraire de la Côte Rouge) through the valley to Saulnes. In Saulnes the cycling path continues, but now paved, to Longwy. But this stretch is not suited for fast cycling with strange curves and small ramps. It takes you past decommissioned industrial land to Longwy. Here the cycling path ends and you follow the Chiers valley towards the Luxemburg border, largely on another cycling path. This cycling path takes you past Longlaville to and across the Luxemburg border and across a footbridge and then to a point close to the tripoint. Here the cycling path ends and you return to Longlaville, and then enter Luxemburg on the N5. A bit further you leave Luxemburg close to the tripoint on the N5F into Belgium. The busy N830 takes you to Athus on the border. You cycle close to the border through Athus and then leave the busy border agglomeration and cycle to Guerlange. You continue on quiet country roads close and on the border to Sélange. Another quiet road takes you to Autelbas-Barnich. From here you cycle via Sterpenich back into Luxemburg. You pass a water tower and follow the border to Steinfort. Via the N4 you continue to Clairefontaine where you follow a quiet valley past a former cloister to Eischen in Luxemburg. Here you take the steep climb to the church and continue to the border crossing at Gaichel. In Belgium, you climb to Heckbous and follow the quiet road to Guirsch past some border stones. You then descend back to the starting point near Oberpallen.

Here you enter Belgium. Just before you can spot a border marker to the left on the triple point. You cannot get to the triple point with a bike, unfortunately. On a later day (May 3, 2023) I went on foot to the triple point and you can see a border marker on both sides of the Chiers River between Luxemburg and Belgium. A new road seems to be built on the Belgian side toward the triple point. The last three pictures were from the later trip.

You pass the Luxemburg border here, cycle on an aluminum grid, pass below a railway bridge into France again, cross a bridge for which you have to get off your bike, and then cycle to a place near the triple point of France, Luxemburg and Belgium (cannot be seen). Here the cycling path ends and you cannot continue after a few hundred meters, so you go back the same way up to Longlaville.
