Itinerary description
Before starting the ride in Púbol be sure to visit the Gala Dalí Castle that Salvador Dalí bought for his companion Gala. Today it's a museum and Dalí did much of the decorating and contains many of his paintings and sculptures. His Cadillac is also on display and Gala's crypt can also be seen. The garden contains sculptures of the famous elephants portrayed in his paintings.
The ride from Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol to the Castell d’Empordà in la Bisbal d'Empordà begins with a three-mile climb to Madremanya passing through beautiful countryside and quaint villages. From Madremanya the route descends for an additional 3 miles to the beautiful old Medieval village of Monells with narrow cobblestoned streets and a scenic main plaza ringed with several restaurants. Monells is a perfect spot for lunch or a snack before continuing the ride.
An easy 10 miles on relatively level terrain through the countryside bypassing Casavells, Parlavà, Matajudaica and Ullastret brings you to the small village of Canapost. The fascinating Església de Sant Esteve de Canapost and its medieval anthropomorphic tombs are well worth a visit.
From Canapost you continue 2 miles southwest passing Vulpellac with its castle before entering the town of la Bisbal d'Empordá. From the center of town, you steadily climb until reaching the Castell d'Empordá with its impressive edifice and expansive views of the countryside.
