I did this route in the Tamok Valley driving a dog sled on the snow and it was a wonderful experience. The journey was about 15 km but I had a technical problem with my navigator and therefore I was only able to record the last 4 km.
The valley is spectacular and is located in the Norwegian Arctic Circle, it is surrounded by completely snow-capped hills and mountains which, by blocking the humidity, manage to create a particular drier microclimate making the sky almost always clear.
Furthermore, the valley alternates with dense woods and large clearings but in both cases the views are breathtaking and are made even more suggestive by the weak light of the polar winter.
Each sled is pulled by 6 dogs and there are no commands to drive except the voice and two different types of brakes: one in plastic to slow down the ride gently and another in iron for more decisive braking and moreover it is used when it stops like a kind of handbrake.
The rope that binds the sled to the dogs must always be taut and it is important that the sled never goes faster than the dogs to avoid running them over.
Driving the sled is quite challenging as you never have to get distracted to avoid any kind of accident. In the first sections of the route, as there are numerous climbs, it is necessary to help the dogs sometimes by pushing with one foot and on the steeper slopes it is necessary to get off the sled to push it by hand. The same must be done in the points where the snow is deep and not beaten as the dogs sinking more and encountering more difficulty in running. It is essential to always keep both hands firmly on the sled and always look forward to pay attention to the various branches that during the ride reach the body directly (in some cases to the face), to the holes and the steepest slopes, in fact it is not to rule out that the sled can overturn!
Having suitable clothing is also important as the temperatures are very cold and when running with the sled the perceived temperature is considerably lower than the real one.
