Itinerary description

The Bicentennial National Trail is a mixed usage trail stretching over 5000 km from North Queensland to Victoria. It incorporates a mixture of country roads and trails crossing both public and private land. Section 6 of the trail covers Southern Queensland from Blackbutt to Killarney near the NSW border.
To complete the trail membership of the BNT is required, along with landholder permission in some segments. The BNT sell guide books which provide detailed information on access and route.
Rather than completing the section as one long through ride, I divided it into a series of 18 day circuits each containing a segment of BNT with a loop back via back country trails. The length of the circuits range from 32 to 84 km. I measured section 6 at 396 km, but all 18 circuits and the one connection section cover a total of 939 km. A high degree of fitness is required to complete some of the longer circuits (2, 11, and 13) in a single day. Camping options for overnight trips are outlined in the BNT guide.
The trail is isolated and remote in many parts. Surface varies from bitumen to rugged bushland with little or no track. Some segments are steep and include long hard climbs.
I completed the circuits over an 18 month period on my Cube eMTB. The period over which I rode included the Summer of 2019/2020 with conditions including severe drought, bush-fires and then heavy rain with lush green. I finished just before the start of the pandemic lockdown.
