Itinerary description
I had to do some business at the Kaiserbaracke - which is an industrial park in the vicinity of Amel. Why not going by bike?
It's a long ride, close to 70 kilometers. The ride to Amel follows (mostly quiet) country roads and forest trails, the return is mainly along the RAVeL Vennbahn bicycle trail, all asphalt, low gradient.
Three interesting spots along the trail: the uphill stretch from Montenau, starting at way point Route de Montenau. This is a very steep (up to 30%) uphill single track. I rode most of it, but had to push for about 100 meters, as the rocks and roots were too high for the pedals in uphill mode. A downhill trip should be interesting and possible! Even the part that I managed (with my e-MTB) to go uphill, is difficult; if you do not feel up for it, try some alternative ways.
The Autobahn E42 is crossed by way of a pedestrian tunnel. It looks very creepy, very dark, but is clean save for the mosquitoes at both entrances. Having been riding in the sun for a while, it was good to have a light at the bike. On the other side of the tunnel is the industrial park. Since I had left my gloves at the park, I had to cross the tunnel four times, and every time was as creepy as the first.
Finally, on the way back, there is the Nature-TV along the RAVeL. A frame simulates a widescreen TV, and there is some commentary in French, Dutch or German, to give the full TV impression. A great spot to ponder!
