Itinerary description
Naughty walk to the Red Lion
We parked up in the Baths and Spa Complex and then just walked to the start of this route back over the entrance road to the baths and left, marked as a tourist trail to the Castilejo. You can park by the side of the road here, if you wish.
The actual trail begins by walking through the gateway to a finca. Head straight up the hill towards some concrete steps leading to a water plant. There are lots of ruins of ancient waterworks here from Roman times. Head back down towards the new spa complex , on a path which goes off to the left and follows a big water pipe. There are a couple of minor drop offs which you have to negotiate. You will soon be following a newly established fence as well as the pipe. On the slope running down to the pipe, on the other side of the pipe to the fence, you will clearly be able to see some fossils in the scree. You will start to see the site of the old baths complex on the other side of the fence. Suddenly a gate appears. It was open when we visited. We entered the gate heading towards the new baths complex down the hill and were able to wander over the old Roman baths. Do not be put off by the huge closed gate, if you head slightly back up the hill again, you will see another open gate. Go through this and head back down to the road at the bottom of the hill. Turn right and follow this road. You will shortly come to the Red Lion Bar on your right. Continue until you come to a left hand turn which will take you back to the new baths complex with brightly coloured hotels and buildings which reminded us of Portmeirion.
