Itinerary description
This walk takes in three lesser walked peaks in the Sierras to the north of Acebuchal. Some scrambling skills are required, hence the difficult grading. The summit of Cerro Verde is easily achieved and the other two peaks can be by-passed if required - just keep to the main path after leaving Puerto Blanquillo.
The route follows the much walked Arroyo de Acebuchal, joining the Camino del Daire and passing over Puerto Paez Blanca. After reaching Cortijo del Daire the route leaves the Camino and threads its way upwards to the Collado de los Hornillos before reaching Puerto Blanquillo.
At Puerto Blanquillo a path will be found which strikes off South-West below the ridge of the target peaks. After passing the first gully - take care - a small col is reached. Leave this and head up onto the ridge and then turn left (south-west) for Cerro Pradillos, the highest point in this walk. Regain the path which will be visible below and follow to the summit of Cerro Verde. Note that the path does not go to the actual summit which is partially hidden amongst the pine trees. Sadly, the triangulation pillar has been covered in objectionable graffiti.
The path continues heading roughly south towards the well named Cerro Atalaya, an exposed lump of rock visible from much of the surrounding area. The path passes beneath the almost sheer east face and rises towards a stone built cairn which marks a short path branching acutely right towards the more craggy west face. Pick a line which suits you tending towards the north where a small gap in the rocks allows access to the opposite side, where an easy scramble takes you to the summit.
Enjoy the views which go with the name!
Return to the path and continue descending. For a short distance the path crosses onto the north side of the ridge where it becomes a little difficult to follow. When you think you have come to a dead-end, take a careful look around and the path will become clear! You will then join the crushed marble track just beyond a small square water tank at Cruz de Canillas. Head south around the west side of Cerro Gavilan with its Vigilancia, and where the track opens to extensive views to the south and east look for a path which leads down towards Casa de la Mina. This is marked by a small cairn and starts off its winding descent to the north-east.
This path drops steeply towards the Hotel (Casa de la Mina) which becomes ever closer as the path twists on its descent. Join the Camino and turn left towards the buildings. Almost opposite the Hotel entrance turn into the track on the right and follow this down until you reach the Rio Torrox at the Fabrica de Luz (Now refurbished). Cross the bridge and join with the Acebuchal-Competa Camino. A left turn here will lead you to Acebuchal.
