Itinerary description
Some time ago a friend spoke to me about some hiking routes near the village of El Acebuchal. His enthusiasm for the place made me sit up and take note, and one Sunday in December 2014 we decided to go to investigate the area and the routes. Acebuchal is 7 km from Frigiliana. The greater part of the roadway that connects Frigiliana and the village of Acebuchal, is narrow and a dirt track. About 5 km from Frigiliana a little group of houses below in the valley between Las Lomas del Fuerte and the hills of La Mata. In the village there is parking near the little Church of Saint Anthony, and there is the Bar El Acebuchal. We had downloaded a route from Wikiloc to do a hike of about 7km behind the village. A young man in the Bar recommended that we should do the route in reverse, beginning with the steep climb and returning by the gentle slope back to the village. We decided to do the walk that way, and in my opinion the young man was right, it is the best way. From the Bar we walked downhill passing the Sanctuary and in the Parking there is a path climbing to the right. The first kilometre and a half is a tough climb through open land with no real pathway, and it is necessary to take it slowly and calmly. Once at the waypoint "fin ascenso" we join an well trodden path, and except for the part marked "peligroso", it is gentle, and from there we join a wide pathway. On this path we arrive at the Paez Blanca Gap, and later to the Venta Cebollera and then the Verde Gap. Here we began our descent through the bed of the Acebuchal Stream, passing a Lime Kiln, until we reached the Sanctuary of San Judas Tadeo, and a walk of 200 meters by road to the Bar of the village. This is a lovely route, well signposted with blue paint marks, and but for the 50 meter dangerous part, it is really not difficult. The views are spectacular ranging from the mountains to the sea, and the village is well worth a visit.

Nice route that starts and ends at the bar El Acebuchal, where they serve good food and cool beers. When starting west from the bar, the route begins with a long and steep climb on a narrow sand path littered with small stones. Once up in the mountains the path remains narrow and littered with stones, and has steep slopes down right next to it, sometimes dangerous. Not always for the faint of heart, but recommendable!
