Itinerary description
So, with my apology explaining the lack of photographs (I have included some taken at other times along some of the route) allow me to narrate a little about this delightful route. There is nothing complicated about the route and only distance might put off all but the strongest walkers.
Starting at Acebuchal the route follows the Arroyo de Acebuchal to the Camino del Daire and the GR 249 (Gran Senda de Malaga). The well signed GR 249 is followed passing Cortijo del Daire and then turning off right just beyond the ruins. A plethora of signs abound here!
Cross over the Arroyo de Majadillos by way of an old pallet and continue along the stony path quickly gaining height. Leave this on the left and follow a twisting path through the scrub, thankfully trimmed back a little making progress less troublesome to bare legs!
Continue a gradual ascent, passing the Lucero path junction where GR 249 signs aid direction and soon reach the Collado de los Hornillos at 1200m. The path heads roughly north towards the Puerto Blanquillo, but before then our route parts company with the GR 249 which turns left. Continue on a winding upward path and meet with another coming up from Puerto Blanquillo which will have been visible below. Follow this path which swings into the pine forest for a short distance before reaching Puerto Competa at 1400m.
A very obvious bulldozed fire break comes steeply down from the left. Make your way up this passing a rain gauge before meeting up with a forest track. This track now forms most of the remaining route as it traverses the edge of the National Park and the Malaga/Granada boundaries.
At the Collado de los Carneros head down the track towards the right dropping height until you reach the wonderful ruins of Haza del Aguadero situated about 1400m in a delightful setting with some fine deciduous trees in the vicinity. Pass the ruins keeping them on your right and follow the track which climbs up the hill. You may come across horses and cattle grazing hereabouts - the cattle wear bells!
Ignore any minor track junctions and steadily climb about 300m to the col where a small cairn marks the point at which to strike off right for the summit of Malas Camas. The stony slopes offer up a few small cairns, but there is not much evidence of a path - just pick your own route to the short summit ridge where a Triangulation Pillar (Vertice Geodesico) marks the 1792m summit. (If only I could tell about the view!!)
Return to the track and take the one directly ahead as it passes initially over a flattish grassy area. This ascends for a short distance before picking up the edge of the forest (on your right hand side). Now follow this track roughly eastwards towards the Collado de los Carneros where you join with the outbound route. Now backtrack to Acebuchal.
This is certainly a walk which I hope to repeat in better weather and obtain images of the views. Watch this space!

Finally, as promised, I managed to do this walk again, with a slight twist!
I started from Cortijo del Daire and took in the additional peaks of the Sierra Jatar. Photographs are attached which also apply to this route and can be found under my recent listing : Peaks of the Sierra Jatar from Cortijo del Daire.
