Itinerary description
Across Arnøya from Arnøyhamn to Nord-Rekvika and then to Årviksand.
Arnøyhamn is most easily reached by speedboat from Tromsø, check www.tromskortet.no for timetables. When I did this hike, it was late August and I arrived in the evening, so I couldn't do much hiking the first day, but made a camp quickly. It's easy to find a campsite in the valley north of Arnøyhamn, even in the dark. On the second day I walked through the easy terrain all the way to the Arctic ocean beach near Nord-Rekvika. I walked down on the right side of the valley; it's probably easier on the left side, as one avoids two river crossings, but there's a nice beach just east of the outflow of the Nord-Rekvikelva into the ocean. I camped here and on my 3rd and final day I walked along Nord-Rekvika and Rotvåg to Årviksand. The path from Rotvåg to Årviksand is arduous with some steep and difficult sections, but at the worst parts there are ropes attached, so I still classify this hike as "Moderate", not "Difficult". From Årviksand I walked along the road while hitch-hiking to Arnøyhamn; it took three hours and ten cars before I was picked up (there are occasional buses from Årviksand to Arnøyhamn, but the timetable was not suitable for me).
From Arnøyhamn one can then take again the speedboat to either Skjervøy or Tromsø.
