Alava1000+ 1018 m Peña del Silo

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es la Peña del Silo, de 1018 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Modesta elevación de los Montes de Vitoria que domina la aldea de Okia (794 m) al pie del desfiladero del río Ayuda. Desde Okia parece una montaña más característica de lo que realmente es, ya que apenas posee entidad como cumbre. Su parte superior aparece cubierta de hayas pero presenta excelente vista sobre el valle de Okia. No obstante figuró en la relación de montañas puntuables del año 1950, en la posición 160 del listado de cumbres de "Álava". La posición del punto más elevado parece localizarse algunos metros al Oeste de la cota (1021 m) marcada en el mapa (MTN25 138.3-Aretxabaleta, 2005). Los datos LIDAR (MDT05-0138-LIDAR) confirman una elevación (1018 m) en esa zona, que es donde se ubica el buzón de montaña actual

En las proximidades de la cumbre se halla el Silo de Okia, que da nombre a la peña. Se trata de una sima de una treintena de metros de caída vertical. La leyenda cuenta que una chica cayó en el silo y nunca se le encontró pero que sus pendientes aparecieron en la fuente del pueblo. También existe la creencia en la llanada que las nubes tormentosas y los fuertes vientos se originan en el interior terrestre y salen al exterior por el silo de Okia. También se dice que en su interior se guarda un becerro de Oro custodiado por brujas y otros monstruos. También que la cavidad se halla guardada por un toro de Oro. En Onraeta dicen que nadie debe perturbar la quietud de aquel paraje. El Silo es también morada de la diosa mitológica Mari

Mi ascensión

En la carretera que lleva a Okina, un poco antes de llegar, hay un espacio donde se pueden dejar los coches. Los fines de semana hay muchos senderistas porque este es un sitio muy conocido

La ruta comienza por una pista abierta que enseguida nos lleva a un riachuelo, que hay que seguir. El riachuelo desemboca poco más abajo en el río Ayuda, el cual cruzaremos por un puente. Tras el puente, entramos en el bosque de hayas que conduce a la cumbre. La cima está coronada con un bonito buzón montañero. En el bosque no hay sendero marcado, tan sólo hay que seguir el GPS; no tiene pérdida. En alguna zona puede tener pendientes importantes (30%) pero son tramos cortos y se deben pasar con un poco de cuidado. Los bastones son de gran ayuda aquí. Si está húmedo y es otoño-invierno, el bosque estará cubierto de hojas de haya resbaladizas. En general, esta ruta discurre por lugares en donde es fácil que se acumule muchísimo barro y agua; es aconsejable elegir un día seco para caminar por aquí

Una vez que se ha alcanzado la cima, se puede caminar hasta una famosa sima. Para ello hay que cruzar una alambrada que tiene un tramo cortado. Es el único tramo que se puede franquear así que hay que buscarlo. Está marcado en mi track como WPT “Alambrada”. La sima no es ninguna tontería. Si te caes, te matas. Está vallada, pero se puede acercar hasta el borde

La vuelta la hice siguiendo el barranco Cilikiturri, bajando hasta llegar al pueblo de Okina. Esta bajada hay que hacerla dejando el río a la izquierda. Este tramo del camino es muy relajado y bonito. Al llegar a Okina, se cruza el pueblo en dirección a la Fuente de La Salud y de allí, directo al punto donde está el coche

Es una ruta un poquito exigente pero bonita. Ojo con el barro y con las zonas de pendiente elevada

Modest elevation of the Vitoria Mountains that dominates the village of Okia (794 m) at the foot of the gorge of the river Ayuda. From Okia it looks like a more characteristic mountain than it really is, since it hardly has any entity as a summit. Its upper part is covered with beech trees but it has an excellent view over the Okia valley. Nevertheless, it was included in the list of mountains of the year 1950, in the position 160 of the list of summits of "Álava". The position of the highest point seems to be located a few meters west of the elevation (1021 m) marked on the map (MTN25 138.3-Aretxabaleta, 2005). LIDAR data (MDT05-0138-LIDAR) confirm an elevation (1018 m) in that area, which is where the present mountain mailbox is located

In the vicinity of the summit is the Silo de Okia, which gives its name to the peak. It is a chasm of about thirty meters of vertical drop. Legend says that a girl fell into the silo and was never found, but that her earrings appeared in the village fountain. There is also the belief in the plain that storm clouds and strong winds originate in the earth's interior and come out through the Okia silo. It is also said that a golden calf guarded by witches and other monsters is kept inside. It is also said that the cavity is guarded by a golden bull. In Onraeta they say that no one should disturb the quietness of that place. The Silo is also the abode of the mythological goddess Mari

My ascent

On the road leading to Okina, a little before arriving, there is a space where you can leave your car. On weekends there are many hikers because this is a very well-known site

The route begins on an open track that immediately leads to a small stream, which must be followed. The stream flows a little further down into the river Ayuda, which we cross over a bridge. After the bridge, we enter the beech forest that leads to the summit. The summit is crowned with a nice mountaineer's letterbox. In the forest there is no marked trail, just follow the GPS; you can't get lost. In some areas it can have significant slopes (30%) but they are short sections and should be passed with a little care. Walking sticks are a great help here. If it is wet and it is autumn-winter, the forest will be covered with slippery beech leaves. In general, this route runs through places where it is easy for lots and lots of mud and water to accumulate; it is advisable to choose a dry day to walk here

Once you have reached the top, you can walk up to a famous chasm. To do this you have to cross a wire fence that has a section cut off. It is the only section that can be crossed so you have to look for it. It is marked on my track as WPT "Wire fence". The chasm is no bullshit. If you fall in, you'll kill yourself. It is fenced off, but you can get close to the edge

I returned following the Cilikiturri ravine, going down to the village of Okina. This descent must be done leaving the river to the left. This section of the trail is very relaxed and beautiful. When you reach Okina, cross the village in the direction of the Fuente de La Salud and from there, straight to the point where the car is located

It is a demanding but beautiful route. Be careful with the mud and the steep areas
