Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Costoria, de 1024 metros

Modestísima cumbre de la Sierra de Artzena. Posee poco interés aunque se halla recogida en el catálogo de montes de Euskal Herria. Sin visibilidad, se halla cubierta por el pino silvestre

Desde Barrio (681 m) parte la ascensión normal. Tendremos así mismo la oportunidad de observar o ascender al peñón de Cárabo (941 m), vigía de estos lares, en cuya cima reposaron los restos de una fortificación. La ascensión desde Nograro (664 m) es, asimismo, factible

El toponimia manor de González de Salazar en su tomo 6, pág.95, recoge como término Costoria, como alto cercano a Barrio, en el límite de la Comunidad de Árcena (Valdegovía). Los mapas del I.G.N. y las ediciones del S.G.E. denominan a la cumbre Custodia o Alto de la Custodia, de forma invariable desde el año 1932

Mi ascensión

Preciosa ruta que comienza en el parking del pueblo de Barrio. Iniciamos el camino en dirección a la ermita de la Virgen de la Mellera, para seguidamente dirigirnos hacia arriba, siempre entre bosques de pinos. La senda está mejor marcada en unos sitios que en otros, pero siempre es fácil orientarse. Incluso cuando tenemos que caminar entre los pinos, el bosque es abierto y no hay matorral bajo que dificulte caminar. Como digo, todo es pino en su mayor parte, con mucho acebo y helecho. En invierno los helechos están marrones pero en primavera esta ruta debe ser impresionantemente verde

La pendiente no es exagerada, aproximadamente un 15%, aunque en algunos puntos puede rondar el 20%. Desde el WPT “Salida de pista para cima”, nos adentramos en un maravilloso bosque de pinos a través de una trocha que nos llevará hasta la cima, donde vamos a encontrar un precioso hito. Quedarse un buen rato sentado en las piedras que hay en la cima es un fantástico premio después del esfuerzo

El retorno también tiene parte a través de bosque y a lo largo de pista. Todas las pistas forestales son de tierra suave, muchas veces con hierba, lo que hace de este paseo una delicia. Caminar entre los pinos no tiene ninguna complicación y es muy fácil orientarse. Esta es una ruta muy aconsejable, cuya única dificultad puede ser la pendiente

The normal ascent starts from Barrio (681 m). We will also have the opportunity to observe or ascend to the Cárabo rock (941 m), watchtower of these lands, in whose summit rested the remains of a fortification. The ascent from Nograro (664 m) is also feasible

My ascent

Beautiful trail that begins in the parking lot of the village of Barrio. We started the way in the direction of the hermitage of the Virgen de la Mellera, and then head upwards, always between pine forests. The path is better defined in some places than in others, but it is always easy to find your way around. Even when we have to walk among the pines, the forest is open and there is no underbrush to make walking difficult. As I say, it is all pine for the most part, with lots of holly and fern. In winter the ferns are brown but in spring this route must be impressively green

The gradient is not exaggerated, about 15%, although at some points it can be around 20%. From the WPT "Track exit to summit", we enter a wonderful pine forest through a trail that will take us to the top, where we will find a beautiful landmark. Sitting for a while on the stones at the top is a fantastic reward after the effort

The return is also partly through forest and along a trail. All forest trails are soft dirt, often with grass, which makes this walk a delight. Walking through the pines is uncomplicated and it is very easy to find your way around. This is a highly recommended route, which only difficulty may be the steepness of the slope
