Alava1000+ 1036 m Kastillo

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Kastillo, de 1036 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Cumbre despejada y herbosa al S de Oriol (1128 m) y la ermita de Santikurutz (1016 m)

Su cima es un rellano aterrazado de forma artificial rodeada por zanjas abiertas que han sido utilizadas como trincheras en las guerras carlistas y en la contienda civil. No aparece con designación sobre los mapas, pero los naturales parecen referirse a ella como Kastilue, reconociendo con ello su posición defensiva

Mi ascensión

La ruta comienza en el pequeño pueblo de Arriola y se dirige, en primer lugar, a la ermita de San Cristóbal, en un hayedo. Esto supone 2 kilómetros adicionales y no seré yo quien diga que merece la pena el esfuerzo. Para ir a la ermita, atención a la salida de pista en el WPT “Salida de pista hacia la ermita de San Cristóbal”. Tras retomar el ascenso, subimos hasta la desolada cima de Kastillo, de 1036 metros. Para ir a la cima, atención a la salida de la pista en el WPT “Salida de pista hacia la cima”. Esta es una zona de caza y hay multitud de puestos. La cima está marcada apenas con unas piedras y el paisaje del parque natural de Urkiola que se disfruta desde allí es lo único interesante de toda la jornada. Toda la ruta desde Arriola hasta la cima se hace, principalmente, por pista ancha y cómoda que no require especial atención. Se puede disfrutar del bosque, mayoritariamente coníferas. La bajada, por su parte, no es tan agradable. La primera parte de la bajada es bastante pronunciada, con tramos de hasta -40%. Y lo que es peor, le siguen bastantes tramos de pista de cemento o asfalto

Mi opinion particular es que ni la ruta que yo he hecho ni la cima merecen mucho la pena

Clear and grassy summit to the S of Oriol (1128 m) and the Santikurutz hermitage (1016 m)

Its summit is an artificially terraced landing surrounded by open ditches that have been used as trenches in the Carlist wars and in the civil war. It does not appear with designation on the maps, but the natives seem to refer to it as Kastilue, thus recognizing its defensive position

My ascent

The trail starts in the small village of Arriola and heads, first, to the hermitage of San Cristobal, in a beech forest. This is an additional 2 kilometers and I will not be the one to say that it is worth the effort. To go to the hermitage, pay attention to the path exit at WPT “Track exit towards San Cristóbal hermitage”. After resuming the ascent, we climb up to the desolate 1036-meter summit of Kastillo. To go to the top, watch out for the track exit at WPT “Track exit towards summit”. This is a hunting area and there are plenty of stands. The summit is marked with just a few stones and the landscape of the Urkiola natural park that can be enjoyed from there is the only interesting thing of the whole day. The whole hike from Arriola to the summit is mainly on a wide and comfortable track that does not require special attention. You can enjoy the forest, mostly conifers. The descent, on the other hand, is not so pleasant. The first part of the descent is quite steep, with stretches of up to -40%. And what is worse, it is followed by quite a few sections of concrete or asphalt track

My particular opinion is that neither the trail I have done nor the summit are worth it
