La sierra de Badaia presenta una poca habitual orientación N-S, frente a la mayoría de los macizos y sierras vascos que presentan orientación E-W, la orientación del eje de plegamiento pirenaico. Su máxima elevación se da en esta cumbre de Oteros (1038 m), en la que antiguamente hubo un castillo. Sólo algunas rocas sueltas entorno al actual vértice geodésico parecen ofrecer alguna prueba de ello. Más al Norte, y separada por un ancho y poco perceptible collado, se halla la cumbre de Lorritxo (1027 m), con mejor panorámica de la capital Alavesa

La sierra de Badaia forma un gran sinclinal colgado con una altitud mínima de 800 metros en el eje Tortura-Hueto Arriba y elevaciones de 900 m en la Cruz de Ganalto (N) y 1.038 m en Oteros (S), constituyendo una gran meseta de bordes inclinado, de fácil pero largo caminar. En su mayor parte se halla cubierta por un denso bosque mediterráneo bien poblado con encinas y madroños, favorecido por la destacada orientación al mediodía de su dilatada ladera. No obstante, la sierra ofrece un paisaje notablemente distinto desde el valle e Koartango, al ofrecer un corte rocoso en regular balconada durante algunos kilómetros

Su importante masa forestal ha sufrido importantes incendios en épocas pasadas (s. XX), y si bien el tiempo ha conseguido que la naturaleza regenere el espacio perdido, la construcción de una central eólica buscando el viento de las cimas la ha vuelto a degradar de manera aún más significativa y visible. Pero lo más llamativo para el amante de la naturaleza es que algunos de estos proyectos eólicos se lleven a cabo después de pugnas aberrantes en las que priman más los intereses personales y partidistas que la propia conservación del medio ambiente

Mi ascensión

El coche se puede dejar en el aparcamiento del jardín botánico de Santa Catalina, cerca de la población de Trespuentes. Esta ruta es una mezcla de sendas de tierra, prados, pistas para los vehículos 4x4 de mantenimiento que suben al parque eólico, carreteras de cemento y pistas de piedra. En general la ruta no es atractiva salvo el tramo que hay tras el WPT “Inicio del bosque”, en donde el bosque abierto por el que caminamos se cierra y progresar a través de él se vuelve algo divertido. La cima tampoco destaca por nada especial. Se halla junto a un aerogenerador, ejemplo de la degradación que ha sufrido esta zona de Álava. La cima tiene un vértice geodésico y dos buzones de montaña. La planicie en la que se encuentra el parque eólico tiene varias simas que están convenientemente protegidas para evitar caídas

La ruta es fácil de seguir, sin desvíos escondidos, aunque es conveniente ir un poco pendiente del GPS

The Badaia mountain range has an unusual N-S orientation, as opposed to most of the Basque massifs and mountain ranges that have an E-W orientation, the orientation of the Pyrenean folding axis. Its highest elevation is at the summit of Oteros (1038 m), where there used to be a castle. Only some loose rocks around the current geodesic vertex seem to offer some evidence of this. Further north, and separated by a wide and barely perceptible hill, is the summit of Lorritxo (1027 m), with a better panoramic view of the capital of Alava

The Badaia mountain range forms a large hanging syncline with a minimum altitude of 800 m in the Tortura-Hueto Arriba axis and elevations of 900 m in Cruz de Ganalto (N) and 1,038 m in Oteros (S), constituting a large plateau of sloping edges, an easy but long walk. For the most part it is covered by a dense Mediterranean forest well populated with oaks and strawberry trees, favored by the prominent noon orientation of its long slope. Nevertheless, the mountain range offers a notably different landscape from the Koartango valley, offering a rocky cut in a regular balcony for some kilometers

Its important forest mass has suffered important fires in past times (XX century), and although the time has managed that the nature regenerates the lost space, the construction of a wind power station looking for the wind of the summits has returned to degrade it in an even more significant and visible way. But the most striking thing for the nature lover is that some of these wind projects are carried out after aberrant struggles in which personal and parties interests are more important than the conservation of the environment itself

My ascent

The car can be left in the parking lot of the botanical garden of Santa Catalina, near the village of Trespuentes. The trail is a mixture of dirt tracks, meadows, tracks for the 4x4 maintenance vehicles going up to the wind farm, concrete roads and stone tracks. The trail is generally unattractive except for the section after the WPT "Start of the forest", where the open forest we walk through closes in and progressing through it becomes somewhat fun. The summit does not stand out for anything special either. It is next to a wind turbine, an example of the degradation that this area of Alava has suffered. The summit has a geodesic vertex and two mountain mailboxes. The plain where the wind farm is located has several chasms that are conveniently protected to prevent falls

The trail is easy to follow, with no hidden detours, although it is advisable to keep an eye on the GPS

Neither the trail I have followed nor the summit seemed to me anything worthwhile
