Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es la Peña del Santo-Peña Arregui, de 1037 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Interesante cumbre de los Montes de Izki, separada del monte La Muela (1054 m) por el amplio collado de La casilla o Las Casetas (965 m). La cima toma el nombre de Peña Arregi, Peña del Santo, o lo que es igual, de San Román (1037 m)

Esta peña, coronada por una gran cruz de hierro, posee bajo su cumbre la ermita de San Román (980 m), albergada en el interior de una pequeña cueva. Es desde el pueblo de Durruma Kanpetzu, San Roman de Campezo, (840 m) desde donde se efectúa su acceso más sencillo, dirigiéndonos al collado de La Casilla (965 m) que forma la cumbre con La Muela (1055 m) y siguiendo el cresterío hasta la panorámica cumbre (1042 m) desde la cual se descubre el valle del Ega con las sierras de Toloño y Kodes al fondo

Desde Korres (702 m) hay que bajar al área de esparcimiento que hay bajo el pueblo. Aquí se cruza un puente y se toma una pista que toma dirección Sur y luego gira a la izquierda para ir penetrando en el boscoso barranco de Castejón. La ruta, marcada con balizas amarillas lleva al collado La Casilla (965 m), y de aquí, por la derecha, a la cima

Mi ascensión

Ascensión muy entretenida y divertida que se inicia en el pueblo de Korres, dejando el coche en el aparcamiento público que hay. La ruta comienza pasando por el área recreativa a las afueras del pueblo, muy bien equipada con mesas y barbacoas

El ascenso no es duro y se hace por pista de tierra muy cómoda. Las sendas y pistas que se siguen en esta ruta son interesantes. Los desvíos no tienen mucha complicación porque son muy fáciles de ver. La marca que debemos seguir en toda la ruta, salvo el ascenso a la cima, son puntos redondos amarillos

En el WPT “Desvío derecha” hay que abandonar la pista ancha y cómoda que seguimos para meternos en un bosque de haya y boj, bastante cerrado y muy chulo. Este desvío está indicado por un poste pero es fácil saltárselo

La ermita de San Román es fácil de encontrar pero acceder a la cima requiere sobrepasar la ermita unos 250 metros, hasta el WPT “Paso Portillo”. Este es el punto por el que se puede subir la pared que queda a nuestra izquierda y que da paso a la parte superior de la cresta. El Paso Portillo no es complicado de subir pero seguramente tengas que echar las manos a la roca para ayudarte. Una vez pasado el Paso Portillo, hay que desandar unos 350 metros hacia el oeste hasta llegar a la cima. El paisaje desde allí merece la pena el esfuerzo. Hay una gran cruz y una pequeña figura de una bruja. El pueblo de San Román de Campezo se ve justo a nuestros pies. El retorno se hace por el mismo Paso Portillo, con precaución en la bajada

El camino de vuelta no tiene ninguna complicación. Es una bajada sencilla seguida de una larga parte plana. Hay un desvío no muy obvio. Es el WPT “Salida derecha” y hay que buscar la nueva senda porque está un poco escondida y no muy limpia de maleza, dejando el riachuelo a la izquierda durante unos 400 metros hasta volver a tomar una senda más ancha. Los últimos 5 kilómetros no tienen ningún interés

Con todo, esta ruta y esta cima son divertidas y entretenidas y no son complicadas si se va con un mínimo de atención y cuidado. Gran parte del camino está protegida por la sombra de los árboles, salvo esos últimos 5 kilómetros mencionados

Interesting summit of the Izki Mountains, separated from La Muela mountain (1054 m) by the wide pass of La casilla or Las Casetas (965 m). The summit takes the name of Peña Arregi, Peña del Santo, or what is the same, of San Román (1037 m)

This rock, crowned by a large iron cross, has under its summit the hermitage of San Román (980 m), housed inside a small cave. It is from the village of Durruma Kanpetzu, San Roman de Campezo, (840 m) from where the easiest access is made, going to the pass of La Casilla (965 m) that forms the summit with La Muela (1055 m) and following the ridge to the panoramic summit (1042 m) from which the valley of the Ega can be seen with the mountains of Toloño and Kodes in the background

From Korres (702 m) you have to go down to the recreation area below the village. Here you cross a bridge and take a track that heads south and then turns left to enter the wooded ravine of Castejón. The trail, marked with yellow markers, leads to La Casilla pass (965 m), and from here, on the right, to the summit

My ascent

Very entertaining and fun ascent that starts in the village of Korres, leaving the car in the public parking there. The trail begins passing through the recreational area on the outskirts of the village, very well equipped with tables and barbecues

The ascent is not hard and is done on a very comfortable dirt track. The paths and tracks that are followed on this route are interesting. The detours are not very complicated because they are very easy to see. The trail is marked with round yellow dots, except for the ascent to the summit

At the WPT "Detour right" we must leave the wide and comfortable track that we follow to get into a forest of beech and boxwood, quite enclosed and very cute. This detour is indicated by a post but it is easy to skip it

The hermitage of San Roman is easy to find but access to the summit requires going over the hermitage about 250 meters, to the WPT "Paso Portillo". This is the point where you can climb the wall on your left that leads to the top of the ridge. The Portillo Pass is not difficult to climb but you will probably have to put your hands on the rock to help you. Once past Portillo Pass, you have to retrace about 350 meters to the west until you reach the top. The scenery from there is worth the effort. There is a large cross and a small figure of a witch. The village of San Román de Campezo can be seen right at our feet. The return is made by the same Portillo Pass, with caution on the way down

The trail back has no complications. It is a simple descent followed by a long flat part. There is a not very obvious detour. It is the WPT "Exit right" and you have to look for the new path because it is a bit hidden and not very clean of undergrowth, leaving the creek on the left for about 400 meters to retake a wider path. The last 5 kilometers are of no interest

All in all, this trail and this summit are fun and entertaining and are not complicated if you go with a minimum of attention and care. Much of the trail is protected by the shade of the trees, except for the last 5 kilometers mentioned above
