Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Santa Águeda, de 1041 metros

La meseta de Arburu se encuentra encumbrada en su flanco oriental por tres cumbres muy próximas. De N. a S. son: Mendibibila (1045 m), ocupando una posición ligeramente interior pero con una antecima, al S. (1043 m) que sí que escarpa sobre el valle, Arburu o Arboro (1047 m), la cima más conocida y ascendida, en el centro del conjunto, y Santa Ageda (1041 m), formando una destacada proa rocosa justo en el extremo más meridional del altiplano. Por supuesto, que son cotas que se recorren rápidamente en una visita a la elevación principal

Para la ascensión directa a la cumbre Santa Ageda (1041 m) planteamos el itinerario desde Atauri (641 m) por el peñascal de Peña Rasgada, por ser el itinerario más interesante. En el reborde occidental de Santa Ageda, existe una cornisa biselada que forma una alargada concavidad denominada Peña Rasgada o Cueva de los Moros. Es un yacimiento arqueológico donde se han encontrado enterramientos

Mi ascensión

Bonita y sencilla ruta, saliendo desde Elortza. El coche se deja en un pequeño aparcamiento dentro del pueblo y nos dirgimos hacia la iglesia. En la misma iglesia empieza la pista, entrando en un bosque de robles. Esta ruta está marcada con postes y también con hitos de piedras y marcas blancas y amarillas. Estas indicaciones serán de gran utilidad en algunos puntos

En el camino hacia la cima se pasa por tres miradores que se asoman al importante pueblo de Maeztu. El primero se conoce también como Peña Obi y el tercero, como Peñalascinco. Cada uno de los tres tiene una escultura en hierro de dudoso gusto. Otros puntos especiales son una cueva y el paso por la sencilla loma del Zabalegi, de 865 metros

Una vez que hemos pasado cuevas y miradores, enfilamos ya hacia la cumbre. La senda está bien marcada en toda la ruta salvo en un punto, que he identificado con el WPT “Izquierda”. En ese punto hay que girar a la izquierda y comprobar que a 5 o 10 metros encontramos un poste que indica “Arburu”, que es la dirección que debemos seguir. Si nos saltamos ese desvío acabamos en una ladera perdiendo altura. Si cogemos el rumbo bueno, el acceso a Santa Águeda será fácil y sencillo, caminando pegados a una alta pared de roca a nuestra izquierda. Esta pared tiene un par de pasos que hay que hacer agachados, con cuidado. Otro punto en el que hay que fijarse bien en el GPS es el giro a la derecha que nos lleva al Mirador 2

La llegada a la cima no tiene complicación, encontrándonos con un original hito en acero inoxidable y unas vistas espectaculares. La vuelta la hice por el mismo camino, acortando los miradores que ya había visitado a la subida

El suelo de esta ruta es a veces tierra y a veces roca. No es incómodo. No es una ruta muy soleada en su mayor parte aunque tiene zonas, como la propia cima, despejadas y expuestas al sol

The plateau of Arburu is raised on its eastern flank by three very close peaks. From N. to S. they are: Mendibibila (1045 m), occupying a slightly inner position but with a pre-summit to the S. (1043 m) that does rise above the valley, Arburu or Arboro (1047 m), the best known and most ascended peak, in the center of the whole, and Santa Ageda (1041 m), forming an outstanding rocky prow just at the southernmost end of the plateau. Of course, these are peaks that are quickly covered in a visit to the main elevation

For the direct ascent to the summit of Santa Ageda (1041 m) we propose the route from Atauri (641 m) through the Peña Rasgada crag, as it is the most interesting route. On the western edge of Santa Ageda, there is a beveled ledge that forms an elongated concavity called Peña Rasgada or Cueva de los Moros. It is an archaeological site where burials have been found

My ascent

Nice and easy route, leaving from Elortza. The car is left in a small parking inside the village and we head towards the church. In the church itself the track begins, entering an oak forest. The trail is marked with posts and also with stone milestones and white and yellow markings. These indications will be very useful at some points

On the trail to the summit you will pass three viewpoints overlooking the important village of Maeztu. The first is also known as Peña Obi and the third, as Peñalascinco. Each of the three has an iron sculpture of dubious taste. Other special points are a cave and the passage through the simple hill of Zabalegi, 865 meters high.e

Once we have passed caves and viewpoints, we head towards the summit. The trail is well marked along the entire route except at one point, which I have identified with the WPT "Left". At that point we must turn left and check that at 5 or 10 meters we find a post indicating "Arburu", which is the direction we should follow. If we skip this detour we end up on a slope losing altitude. If we take the right direction, the access to Santa Agueda will be easy and straightforward, walking close to a high rock wall on our left. This wall has a couple of passes that must be done crouching down, carefully. Another point where you have to pay attention to the GPS is the turn to the right that leads to the Viewpoint 2.e

The arrival at the top is not complicated, finding an original milestone in stainless steel and spectacular views. The return I did it by the same trail, shortening the viewpoints that I had already visited on the way up

The soil on this trail is sometimes dirt and sometimes rock. It is not uncomfortable. The trail is not a very sunny route for the most part although it has areas, such as the summit itself, clear and exposed to the sun
