Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Peñarrubia, de 1042 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Cumbre del valle de Valdegovía, cercana y confundible con Raso (1051 m). Posee una antena en la cumbre. Se incluyó en el catálogo de montes del año 1950 en la posición 143 del listado de los "Montes de Álava", junto con el cercano Raso, que estaba en la posición 136. La cota, no obstante, está tomada de una cota intermedia entre Raso y la verdadera cumbre de Peñarrubia, que se encuentra en el extremo del cordal, concretamente en el paraje que los mapas de la época llaman "La Jugadera"

El área del monte Raso queda enmarcada por cuatro cumbres. Las tres primeras pasan de los 1000 metros y conforman la parte más alta del monte. Sus cotas son, de Oeste hacia el Este: Raso (1051 m), 1.042 m, 1.047 m y Peñarrubia (1042 m). El único accidente que se interpone entre todas es ellas es el leve Alto de la Jugadera (1025 m), que separa de dos en dos las cotas enumeradas

Anteriormente tuvo un buzón del G.M. Txarlazo identificándola como Raso. El buzón actual la designa con la denominación correcta

Mi ascensión

Esta ruta se inicia en el pequeño pueblo de Caranca. No encontré un aparcamiento grande así que hay que dejar el coche en el mejor sitio posible pero sin molestar a los vecinos

La ruta es muy, muy fácil de seguir. No hay ningún desvío oculto ni difícil de ver. La pista es, mayoritariamente, de tierra y piedra, ancha y preparada para vehículos todoterreno

En el camino de aproximación nos podemos desviar brevemente a La Cruz Caída, desde donde se disfruta de unas bonitas vistas a Caranca y todo el valle. Este es un desvío que tampoco es que aporte mucho pero, por lo menos, es corto. En este acceso a La Cruz Caída es donde la senda está menos definida, caminando entre pinos y helechos. El punto de desvío está marcado con un hito de rocas; hay que pasar por debajo de una alambrada de espino. El acceso hasta la cruz está marcado con pintura naranja en los árboles



De vuelta a la pista principal, seguimos hasta el siguiente desvío a la derecha, el que nos lleva a la cima. El acceso a la cima es una pendiente de 19 %, 500 metros, que no tiene dificultad y que nos deja en una cima que no tiene ninguna gracia. La enorme antena que hay en la cima le quita todo el interés a la cumbre. Tampoco hay vistas espectaculares. Existe un pequeño buzón montañero



Ya en la bajada tenemos la sorpresa de la ruta. Al girar a la derecha en el WPT “Hayedo”, entramos en un impresionante y precioso bosque, verdísimo, que es una auténtica maravilla. El bosque, aunque no es muy grande, y la senda sobre hierba que viene a continuación, hacen que el descenso sea un disfrute de absoluta tranquilidad



Resumiendo, ruta sencilla, tranquilo y atractiva. No tanto por la cima sino por los tramos de árboles, acebos, hayas y pinos, que se atraviesan. Suelo incómodo, por las piedras, y zonas con algo de pendiente (hasta el 22 %). Hay también alguna zona despejada que puede ser fatigosa si hace mucho sol. Gran parte de la ruta se realiza por sombra, al menos en verano, porque estamos en zona de hayedos

Summit of the valley of Valdegovía, close to Raso (1051 m). It has an antenna on the summit. It was included in the 1950 catalog of mountains in position 143 of the list of the "Mountains of Álava", together with the nearby Raso, which was in position 136. The height, however, is taken from an intermediate height between Raso and the true summit of Peñarrubia, which is at the end of the range, specifically in the place that the maps of that time call "La Jugadera"

The area of Mount Raso is framed by four peaks. The first three are over 1000 meters and form the highest part of the mountain. Their heights are, from west to east: Raso (1051 m), 1042 m, 1047 m and Peñarrubia (1042 m). The only feature that stands between all of them is the slight Alto de la Jugadera (1025 m), which separates from two in two of the listed peaks

Previously it had a letterbox of the G.M. Txarlazo identifying it as Raso. The current letterbox designates it with the correct denomination

My ascent

The trail starts in the small village of Caranca. I did not find a big parking lot so you have to leave the car in the best possible place but without causing any inconvenience to the neighbors

The trail is very, very easy to follow. There are no hidden or difficult to see detours. The track is mostly dirt and stone, wide and prepared for all-terrain vehicles

On the approach trail we can take a short detour to La Cruz Caída (The Fallen Cross), from where we can enjoy beautiful views of Caranca and the whole valley. This is a detour that does not offer much but, at least, it is short. In this access to La Cruz Caída is where the trail is less defined, walking between pines and ferns. The turning point is marked with a rock milestone; you have to pass under a barbed wire fence. The access to the cross is marked with orange paint on the trees



Back on the main trail, we continue to the next turnoff to the right, which takes us to the summit. The access to the summit is a slope of 19%, 500 meters, which has no difficulty and that leaves us on a summit that has no charm. The huge antenna at the top takes away all the interest of the summit. There are no spectacular views either. There is a small mountaineer mailbox



Already on the descent we have the surprise of the trail. Turning right at the WPT "Hayedo", we enter an impressive and beautiful forest, very green, which is a real wonder. The forest, although not very large, and the grassy path that follows, make the descent an enjoyment of absolute tranquility



The trail is easy, quiet and attractive. Not so much for the summit but for the stretches of trees, holly, beech and pines, that are crossed. Uncomfortable ground, because of the stones, and areas with some slope (up to 22%). There are also some open areas that can be hard if it is very sunny. A large part of the trail is in the shade, at least in summer, because we are in a beech forest area
