Una de las cimas más modestas de la sierra de Elgea. Es un pequeño pico al E. del paso de Usakotxena o Usabakotxena (993 m), que comunica Oñati (Araotz) con Araba. En algunos casos aparece denominada como Burgamendi, que aquí denominamos a la siguiente cima de la sierra hacia el E. Mirubizkar también se documenta y puede encajar de forma precisa con esta cima

Mi ascensión

Esta es una preciosa ascensión al pico Mirubizkar, saliendo desde la población guipuzcoana de Araotz. Ya sólo conducir hasta Araotz es una maravilla. Hemos dejado el coche en un parking público y hemos empezado a caminar

Toda la ruta es dentro de bosque, salvo la parte final, tras llegar a la cresta de Elgea. Ahí está el parque eólico y la cresta está despejada. Como digo, toda la ruta es por bosque y por pista de tierra suave. Vemos pinos, hayas, robles, castaños, helechos enormes, acebos y bojs. Alguna parte del camino nos regala con un hayedo realmente maravilloso, aunque los pinos tampoco son poca cosa

Los primeros metros son por asfalto y con bastante pendiente, para salir del pueblo. Nada más salir tenemos el primer punto importante de orientación. Son los WPTs “Derecha…” y “…y luego izquierda”. Hay que encontrar un sendero muy estrecho, con hierba alta a los bordes. Seguimos ese sendero 500 metros hasta encontrarnos con una senda mucho más ancha, donde tomaremos la derecha. Este punto (WPT “Cambio de pista”) es otro lugar de orientación importante en la bajada. Está señalizado con un hito de rocas

Seguimos subiendo, nunca sin grandes pendientes pero una subida continua. Se disfruta del bosque y los árboles. Siempre en sombra y frescos, cruzando algún arroyo. Así llegamos al WPT “Derecha y busca los helechos”, que es el siguiente punto importante de orientación. Éste es un cruce con tres salidas, izquierda, centro y derecha. Hay que tomar la derecha pero, lo más importante, hay que localizar una entrada a un campo de helechos enormes, de más de un metro de altura. La senda a través de los helechos se ve a duras penas. Más bien, se intuye. Son unos 400 metros. Orientarse entre los helechos a la subida es más sencillo que a la bajada. Siempre hay que caminar por el campo de helechos, estando pendiente del GPS

Tras salir de los helechos, ya sólo hay que ir caminando hasta llegar a la cresta, donde ya empiezan a verse y oírse los aerogeneradores del parque eólico. Entre medias nos encontramos con un hayedo fantástico. La llegada a la cresta, donde se ven puestos de caza de paloma, nos presenta la cara sur de la sierra, identificando rápidamente la ciudad de Vitoria. Sólo queda girar a la izquierda y terminar de ascender hasta la cima, que está junto al aerogenerador número 42. La cima tiene un sencillo buzón y una bonita piedra con una cruz grabada. Puede haber ganado suelto

El descenso es por el mismo camino

En resumen, una ruta preciosa, muy verde, fresca y agradecida. Requiere un poco de esfuerzo pero nada excesivo. Sombría y tranquila; una maravilla. Se nota que estamos en la cara norte de la sierra, lo que hace que el suelo y la vegetación estén muy húmedos. No hay barro pero el suelo es un poco resbaladizo. Exceptuando los tres puntos de orientación mencionados, la ruta es fácil de seguir

One of the most modest peaks of the Elgea mountain range. It is a small peak to the E. of the Usakotxena or Usabakotxena pass (993 m), which connects Oñati (Araotz) with Araba. In some cases it is called Burgamendi, which here we call the next peak of the mountain range to the E. Mirubizkar is also documented and may fit precisely with this peak

My ascent

This is a beautiful ascent to the Mirubizkar peak, starting from the town of Araotz in Guipuzcoa. Just driving to Araotz is a marvel. We left the car in a public parking lot and started walking

The whole trail is in the forest, except for the final part, after reaching the crest of Elgea. There is the wind farm and the ridge is clear. As I say, the whole trail is through forest and on a soft dirt track. We see pines, beeches, oaks, chestnut trees, huge ferns, holly and boxwoods. Some part of the trail gives us with a really wonderful beech forest, although the pines are no small thing either

The first meters are on asphalt and quite steep, to leave the village. As soon as we leave we have the first important point of orientation. They are the WPTs "Right..." and "...and then left". We have to find a very narrow path, with high grass on the edges. Follow this path for 500 meters until you come to a much wider path, where you take the right. This point (WPT "Track change") is another important orientation point on the descent. It is marked with a rock milestone

We continue ascending, never without great slopes but a continuous ascent. We enjoy the forest and the trees. Always in shade and cool, crossing some streams. Thus we reach the WPT "Right and look for the ferns", which is the next important point of orientation. This is a junction with three exits, left, center and right. Take the right but, more importantly, locate an entrance to a field of huge ferns, over a meter high. The path through the ferns is barely visible. Rather, it is intuited. It is about 400 meters. Orientation through the ferns on the way up is easier than on the way down. You always have to walk through the field of ferns, keeping an eye on the GPS

After leaving the ferns, you just have to walk until you reach the ridge, where you can see and hear the wind turbines of the wind farm. In between we find a fantastic beech forest. The arrival at the ridge, where you can see pigeon hunting posts, presents us with the south face of the mountain range, quickly identifying the city of Vitoria. It only remains to turn left and finish the ascent to the summit, which is next to the wind turbine number 42. The top has a simple mailbox and a nice stone with a cross engraved on it. There may be loose cattle

The descent is by the same trail

In short, a beautiful trail, very green, fresh and grateful. It requires a little effort but nothing excessive. Shady and quiet; a marvel. You can notice that we are on the north side of the mountain range, which makes the soil and vegetation very humid. There is no mud but the ground is a bit slippery. The trail is easy to follow except for the three orientation points mentioned above
