Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Arraialde, de 1049 metros

Cima que se desprende del eje principal de los Montes de Vitoria en dirección S. Cubierta por el hayedo es divisoria entre los valles de Berrozi y Arraia. Por cierto, que el primero es campo de prácticas de la policía autónoma vasca, estando su acceso terminantemente prohibido. ¡ Una pena ! El episodio más doloroso de la historia de estos parajes tuvo lugar en 1937, cuando fueron ejecutados en el puerto de Azatzeta 16 presos, entonces recluidos en la prisión de la calle la Paz de Vitoria, entre los que se encontraba el entonces alcalde republicano de la ciudad, D. Teodoro González de Zárate

Arraialde (1044 m) forma una alargada cresta cubierta por el hayedo dejando dos cimas de similar altitud. En el extremo N tenemos la cota que recibe el nombre de Lete (1041 m). En la parte S se encuentra el punto más elevado y que parece responder también al nombre de Arrubieta (1049 m)

Podemos iniciar la corta marcha a la cima desde el puerto de Azatzeta o Zaita (895 m), o bien, desde el mismo pueblo de Azatzeta/Zaita (815 m) y desde Birgara (776 m). Estas dos últimas opciones son las más recomendables para evitar el encuentro con la policía autónoma que nos podrá indagar sobre nuestras intenciones

Mi ascensión

Amena ruta desde Vírgara Mayor hasta la cima del monte Arraialde. El coche se puede dejar en un aparcamiento que hay junto a la carretera, donde hay unos paneles informativos. Nada más comenzar la caminata, atravesamos el pueblo para evitar tener que caminar por el arcén de la carretera y seguiremos una senda tras cruzar una puerta de hierro



No es una ascensión difícil. Al principio es un poco aburrida y fea pero el bosque de hayas y robles en la cima merece la pena. El inicio de la ruta está a casi 700 metros de altitud así que el ascenso total no es muy grande

Al llegar a la población de Azáceta hay que cruzar la carretera. Existe un paso de cebra y un semáforo habilitados para hacer que este cruce no sea peligroso. Al final de la ruta, al volver a Vírgara Mayor, tenemos que volver a cruzar la carretera y en este caso no hay semáforo ni paso de peatones. La zona de paso tiene buena visibilidad aunque está en una curva. Cruzad con cuidado

No es difícil orientarse; hay varios desvíos pero son muy visibles. No hay grandes pendientes aunque existe algún tramo corto con un 20%. La pista es casi toda de tierra y piedras, no demasiado incómoda y ancha. Salvo en la cima, no se camina por bosque muy denso ni cerrado

El campo de tiro de la policía autónoma no está muy lejos con lo que es probable que se escuche algún disparo

La cima tiene un buzón en forma de Lauburu y se haya en un entorno precioso: sin visibilidad de nada que no sea el bosque circundante. La salida desde la cima no tiene una senda muy clara y hay que surfear por el bosque siguiendo el GPS. El bosque no es muy denso así que se puede caminar bien. Hay que ir hacia el WPT “Alambrada” para tener un paso cómodo; seguir marcas blancas y amarillas

According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Arraialde, 1049 meters high

This peak falls off the main axis of the Vitoria Mountains towards the south. Covered by the beech forest, it is the dividing line between the valleys of Berrozi and Arraia. By the way, the first one is a practice field of the Basque autonomous police, being its access strictly forbidden. A pity ! The most painful episode in the history of these places took place in 1937, when 16 prisoners were executed in the port of Azatzeta, then held in the prison of La Paz Street in Vitoria, including the then Republican mayor of the city, Mr. Teodoro González de Zárate

Arraialde (1044 m) forms an elongated ridge covered by the beech forest, leaving two peaks of similar altitude. At the N end we have the peak that receives the name of Lete (1041 m). On the S side is the highest point, which also seems to respond to the name of Arrubieta (1049 m)

We can start the short walk to the summit from the port of Azatzeta or Zaita (895 m), or from the village of Azatzeta/Zaita (815 m) and from Birgara (776 m). These last two options are the most advisable to avoid the encounter with the autonomous police who may inquire about our intentions

My ascent

Pleasant trail from Vírgara Mayor to the top of Arraialde mountain. The car can be left in a parking lot next to the road, where there are some information panels. As soon as we start the hike, we cross the village to avoid having to walk on the shoulder of the road and follow a trail after crossing an iron gate



It is not a difficult ascent. It is a bit boring and unsightly at first but the beech and oak forest at the top is worth it. The start of the trail is at almost 700 meters altitude so the total ascent is not very big

When you reach the village of Azáceta you have to cross the road. There is a crosswalk and a traffic light installed to make this crossing not dangerous. At the end of the trail, when returning to Vírgara Mayor, we have to cross the road again and in this case there is no traffic light or pedestrian crossing. The crossing area has good visibility although it is on a curve. Cross with care

It is not difficult to orient yourself; there are several detours but they are very visible. There are no steep slopes although there is some short stretch with a 20% gradient. The track is almost all dirt and stones, not too uncomfortable and wide. Except at the top, the trail is not very dense or closed forest

The shooting range of the autonomous police is not far away so it is likely to hear some shooting

The summit has a Lauburu-shaped letterbox and is in a beautiful setting: no visibility of anything but the surrounding forest. The exit from the summit does not have a very clear path and you have to surf through the forest following the GPS. The forest is not very dense so you can walk easily. You have to go towards the WPT " Wire fence" to have a convenient passage; follow white and yellow markings.
