According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Los Castros-Los Trillos, 1056 meters high
Description of the mountain (extracted from www.mendikat.net):
Rocks located in the Artzena mountain range. They are well visible from the village of Bachicabo (653 m), to the north of the Peña Bachicabo (1201 m), separated from it by the portillo de La Hoz (990 m)
The Peña de los Castros or Los Trillos (1056 m), closes to the east the valley where the village of Barrio (681) is located, dominated by rugged rocks: Carabo (941 m), Berbea (848 m), Los Castros (1056 m), Bachicabo (1201 m) and Canto Pero or Castromayuela (1201 m), as well as the wooded hill of Costoria (1026 m). At the summit there seems to have been a fortification
My ascent
Moderate route that starts in the village of Barrio. The village has a nice parking lot at the entrance
The ascending to Los Castros could be divided into three parts. The first one goes from the parking lot to the WPT "Track exit on the left". It is 1.6 km of gentle ascent on a wide path, through a forest of pines and oaks that ends when we leave the path and get into the forest itself. The new track is visible. The detour is marked with a stone milestone
The second part is a steep ascending with some 50% section. The length is about 330 meters and here poles are essential. The ground is slippery because of the pine leaves on the ground. This ascending is not difficult but requires significant effort. This part ends at the interception of the wide track leading to the Portillo de la Hoz
And the third part of the ascent is the one that goes from the Portillo to the summit. This part starts by ascending between rocks and bushes, without a clear track. We just have to look for clear passages that lead us upwards following our instinct. There comes a moment when we find a rocky promontory that seems that we have to climb. It is not necessary, you can go around it leaving it to the left, passing very close to it. That is not the summit. The summit is the second promontory and we have no choice but ascending it by climbing. The climb is not complicated, neither long nor dangerous. Ten or twelve steps and we are at the top. A small old mailbox awaits us, along with absolutely wonderful views. To the northwest we can clearly see Barrio, the village from where we have left
Scrambling the rock down and reaching the Portillo is not complicated but requires attention and care not to end up trapped in the bushes. Follow your instinct and look for the best passes. If it is not clear, go back a few meters and try another place
The route continues walking quietly up to the Eskaleruela, 1045 meters. In this section there is a detour that is not very clear. It is the WPT "Turn right" and here we leave the track and enter a field of ferns. There are two trees marked with red lines on the detour. There is no clear path through the fern field; it is better to pay attention to the GPS. Not many meters ahead, we reach the beautiful Eskaleruela mailbox
The descent of the Eskaleruela is the second complicated part of this route. It is a very steep descent, where it is easy to slip. The ground is made of dirt and is very covered with leaves, so that the poles get very deep. You have to be very, very careful on this part. Once we reach the plane, we turn left and continue walking up to the third peak, the Costoria, 1024 meters
The next detour, marked with the WPT "Descent on the right", sets us on our way to Barrio through a large pine forest, with no visible path, which we have to descend wild boar style while keeping an eye on the orientation. But there is still one last detour to be careful with. It is marked with the WPT "Detour to Mellera hermitage". At this point we can choose to cross the metal gate and turn right to reach the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Mellera, a few meters away. If we prefer to continue towards Barrio, we have to leave the path we are on and take a trail that is a little to the left. The trail is visible but must be discovered. It is marked with white and blue colors
In summary, this route has the attraction of having to reach the top climbing a few meters but has two points to consider: the steep slope before reaching the Portillo de la Hoz and the steep descent after the Eskaleruela. Knowing and assuming these two compromising points, it is a nice outing to the mountain
