Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el San Kristobal, de 1057 metros

Esta cumbre, como otras de la geografía Alavesa, llamada San Cristóbal, se sitúa en los Montes de Izki, que se caracteriza por sus grandes bosques de roble marojo sobre un terreno arenisco. Este enclave natural declarado parque natural en virtud de acoger uno de los bosques más extensos de esta especie (Quercus Pirenaica) en Europa

El monte San Cristóbal (1057 m) constituye el borde Oeste del diapírico valle de Arraia, cuya capitalidad sostiene Maeztu (659 m). Es una meseta en cuya parte superior se levanta la cumbre en forma de amplia cúpula. Bajo la cima se halla una presa en el lugar llamado Karrantan y las pequeñas peñas de Atxartea donde se halla una escuela de escalada deportiva sobre pequeños muros con agujeros y niveles por encima de 6a/6b. Al Norte de este monte se encaja el barranco de Los Ríos, que se une luego al de Berrozi. La travesía a San Justi (1028 m) a penas muestra desnivel, pues las dos cumbres forman parte de una misma y alargada meseta sobre la que se ubican los rasos de Arboro

Al pie de la regular cornisa que se forma en el extremo de la meseta de Arboro queda el paraje de Txarabitana engalanado por algunas rocas de curiosa fisonomía, así como la cueva de Las Señoritas, de la que no faltan leyendas

Mi ascensión

Esta cima y, en general, esta ruta, no tienen ninguna complicación y pueden entenderse como un paseo. Tan sólo hay un tramo un poco exigente pero son, solamente, 300 metros con un desnivel medio del 26%. Por lo demás, sencilla en cuanto a calidad del suelo y requisitos de orientación

El coche se deja en el aparcamiento que hay detrás de la iglesia de Apellániz. Un buen aparcamiento, grande y cómodo. Atravesamos el pueblo y en seguida nos metemos en pista. Esta ruta discurre prácticamente toda por bosque (roble, haya y castaño, principalmente). En algunas zonas el bosque es más denso y en otras, como en la cima, no hay más que arbustos





El camino asciende los dos primeros kilómetros, hasta unos 820 metros de altitud para luego volver a descender. Desde ahí, ya todo será subida hasta la cima. El gradiente no es pronunciado, salvo el tramo que va desde el WPT “Salida de senda. Inicio de pendiente” hasta el WPT “Llegada a senda”. Ese tramo tiene una fuerte pendiente del 25 % que es un poco exigente. Son sólo 300 metros y no hay senda; hay que caminar sin alejarnos del bosque que está a la derecha y buscando el paso más despejado entre los arbustos. De toda la ruta, esta es la parte en la que la senda no existe

Hay zona en la que la senda no es muy visible. Son los 1500 metros que van desde el WPT “Punto A” al WPT “Punto B”. En este tramo se camina por un precioso hayedo en el que la senda se intuye, más que verse. En cualquier caso, el bosque es muy abierto y está limpio así que no es nada difícil progresar por él guiándose con el GPS

La cima es una loma sin apenas árboles, sólo con matorrales. La vista es interesante, sobre el parque de Izki. En la cumbre hay un vértice geodésico, un pequeño buzón y una cruz. No es una cumbre espectacular, para ser sinceros





En el descenso seguimos una senda fácil. La única complicación, y no significativa, es en el WPT “Salida de pista. Busca vía descendente”. En este punto debemos abandonar la senda y descender entre unas grandes rocas, por una ladera con hierba. Estas rocas están preparadas con cintas express para escalada. Es habitual encontrar aquí escaladores practicando sus técnicas



Dos observaciones: la galería de tiro de la policía autónoma vasca se encuentra en las proximidades y es posible que se escuchen disparos de pistola o ráfagas de algún otro tipo de arma de fuego. También es muy abundante el ganado en esta ruta, principalmente vacas

En resumen, ruta sencilla con alguna complicación poco importante. Caminar entre bosques es lo mejor de todo porque la cima no deja de ser un tanto decepcionante

This summit, like others in the geography of Alava, called San Cristóbal, is located in the Izki Mountains, which is characterized by its large forests of marojo oak on a sandy terrain. This natural enclave has been declared a natural park by virtue of being home to one of the most extensive forests of this species (Quercus Pirenaica) in Europe

Mount San Cristobal (1057 m) is the western edge of the diapiric valley of Arraia, which capital is Maeztu (659 m). It is a plateau on the top of which rises the summit in the form of a large dome. Below the summit there is a dam in the place called Karrantan and the small crags of Atxartea where there is a sport climbing school on small walls with holes and levels above 6a/6b. To the north of this mountain is the Los Ríos ravine, which then joins the Berrozi ravine. The traverse to San Justi (1028 m) hardly shows any unevenness, as the two peaks are part of the same long plateau on which the Arboro rasos are located

At the foot of the regular cornice that is formed in the end of the plateau of Arboro is the place of Txarabitana adorned by some rocks of curious physiognomy, as well as the cave of Las Señoritas, of which there is no lack of legends

My ascent

This summit and, in general, this route, have no complications and can be treated as a walk. There is only one slightly demanding section but it is, only, 300 meters with an average gradient of 26%. Otherwise, it is easy in terms of soil quality and orientation requirements

The car is left in the parking lot behind the church of Apellániz. A good parking, large and convenient. We cross the village and immediately get on track. This route runs almost entirely through forest (oak, beech and chestnut, mainly). In some areas the forest is denser and in others, as at the top, there is nothing but bushes





The road climbs the first two kilometers, up to about 820 meters of altitude and then descends again. From there, it will be ascending all the way to the top. The gradient is not steep, except for the stretch that goes from the WPT "Path exit. Slope starts" to the WPT "Intersection with path". This section has a steep 25% slope that is a bit demanding. It is only 300 meters long and there is no trail; you have to walk without straying from the forest on the right and looking for the clearest path through the bushes. Of the whole route, this is the part in which the path does not exist

There is an area where the path is not very visible, the 1500 meters from WPT "Point A" to WPT "Point B". In this section we walk through a beautiful beech forest in which the trail can be sensed, rather than seen. In any case, the forest is very open and clean so it is not difficult to progress through it guided by the GPS

The top is a hill with hardly any trees, only bushes. The view is interesting, over the Izki park. At the summit there is a geodesic vertex, a small mailbox and a cross. It is not a spectacular summit, to be honest





On the descent we follow an easy path. The only complication, and not a significant one, is on the WPT "Path exit. Look for a descending track". At this point we must leave the trail and descend between some large rocks, on a grassy slope. These rocks are equipped with climbing quickdraws. It is common to find climbers practicing their techniques here



Two observations: the shooting gallery of the Basque autonomous police is located nearby and it is possible to hear pistol shots or bursts of some other type of firearm. Livestock is also very abundant on this route, mainly cows

In summary, a simple route with some minor complications. Walking among forests is the best of all because the top is a bit disappointing
