Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Moratza, de 1058 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

La sierra de Portilla se extiende entre Zambrana (459 m) y el pequeño alto del Somo (760 m) que une Urizaharra/Peñacerrada (754 m) con el condado de Trebiño, limitando por el N la cuenca del río Inglares. Esta cumbre, que recibe el nombre de la cercana aldea que se sitúa al norte de la misma, es el máximo exponente de la sierra y muestra una bella estampa del valle diapírico de Urizaharra con esta villa amurallada en su mismo centro

Antiguamente el caminante que se encaminaba entre La Rioja y Vitoria podía hacer posada en la antigua venta de Moratza que se hallaba al pie de la carretera en el descenso del Alto del Somo

Mi ascensión

Ruta que parte del pueblo de Berganzo. No hay problemas de orientación salvo, quizá, la parte inmediatamente siguiente a la cima y las proximidades del río Inglares. La ruta no es especialmente llamativa por los paisajes porque se camina por pistas con arbustos y árboles de hoja perenne a los lados, que imposibilitan ver el entorno. Tan sólo ya en las inmediaciones de la cima, el camino se abre un poco y permite ver el Condado de Treviño, hacia el norte



La mayor parte de la ruta se hace por pista muy ancha, habilitada para vehículos 4x4, de piedras y tierra, fácil de caminar. La subida no tiene grandes pendientes. La cima tiene un pequeño buzón y lo que parece que son restos de un vivac. El buzón está a la izquierda de la pista y, si no estás atento, te lo pasas sin verlo





La parte que más me ha gustado de la ruta es, precisamente, el descenso. Nada más dejar la cima, se abandona la pista principal. Justo a la altura de un poste indicador, nos metemos en una senda estrecha que va zigzagueando entre arbustos y árboles, bajando con una pendiente pronunciada y con algunos escalones de roca. Esta senda continua hasta llegar a una pista mayor que gira a la derecha (WPT “Llegada a pista”). Esta nueva pista sigue descendiendo pero más suavemente, por un bosque de hayas y robles, hasta llegar a las proximidades del río Inglares. Aquí hay que andar con cuidado porque hay multitud de senderos que salen hacia el río. La pista es visible pero hay muchos cruces con otros senderos. Merece la pena detenerse en la cascada del río Inglares



Tras la cascada llegamos a una poza y, poco después, alcanzamos el final de esta ruta

The Portilla mountain range extends between Zambrana (459 m) and the small Alto del Somo (760 m) that joins Urizaharra/Peñacerrada (754 m) with the county of Trebiño, limiting the basin of the Inglares river to the north. This summit, that receives the name of the near village that is located to its north, is the maximum exponent of the mountain range and shows a beautiful picture of the diapiric valley of Urizaharra with this walled village in its very center

In the past, the traveler who was on his way between La Rioja and Vitoria could stay at the old inn of Moratza, which was located at the foot of the road on the descent of the Alto del Somo

My ascent

Route that begins in the village of Berganzo. There are no orientation problems except, perhaps, the part immediately following the summit and the vicinity of the Inglares River. The route is not particularly striking for the scenery because you walk along tracks with shrubs and evergreen trees on the sides, which make it impossible to see the surroundings. Only in the proximity of the summit, the road opens up a little and allows to see the Condado de Treviño, to the north



Most of the route is on a very wide track, enabled for 4x4 vehicles, of stones and dirt, easy to walk. The climb is not steep. The summit has a small letterbox and what looks like the remains of a bivouac. The letterbox is on the left side of the trail and, if you are not attentive, you will pass it without seeing it





The part that I liked the most of the route is precisely the descent. As soon as you leave the summit, you leave the main trail. Right next to a signpost, we enter a narrow path that zigzags between bushes and trees, descending with a steep slope and some rock steps. This trail continues until you reach a larger trail that turns right (WPT "Arrival to track"). This new track continues descending but more gently, through a forest of beech and oak trees, until you reach the vicinity of the Inglares River. Here you have to walk carefully because there are many trails leading to the river. The track is visible but there are many crossings with other trails. It is worth stopping at the waterfall of the Inglares river



After the waterfall we reach a pond and, shortly after, we reach the end of this route
