Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Izazpikueta, de 1059 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Pertenece a la Sierra de Santiago de Lokiz. La mencionada cadena montañosa se encuentra entre las provincias de Nafarroa al E. y Araba al W. La cima que nos ocupa se encuentra al norte del macizo, es alavesa pero está prácticamente en la línea divisoria entre las dos provincias

Mi ascensión

Esta ruta, corta y con poco ascenso, sale del pueblo de Kontrasta. En el pueblo no hay aparcamiento público así que deja el coche donde no moleste a los vecinos. El pueblo está a 840 metros de altitud, por eso esta ruta tiene muy poco desnivel acumulado

La primera parte de la ruta, tras pasar por una puerta metálica, consiste en ascender hasta un collado. En el paso de esta puerta hay dos caminos muy visibles, con rodadas de coches. Un camino sale hacia la izquierda y otro, hacia la derecha. Hay que tomar el camino que está justo entre esos dos, en el medio. No es tan evidente como los otros dos pero se ve claramente. Este camino sube entre hayas por una pista ancha pero no demasiado limpia. Hay muchas ramas pequeñas cruzadas en el suelo, lo que evidencia que no es una ruta muy habitual. Tras un giro a la izquierda (WPT “Cruce. Continuar por la izquierda // Cross. Keep on the left”), se llega a una nueva pista ascendente, ancha y muy clara de seguir, que nos lleva hasta el collado, a 1030 metros. En el collado se continúa hacia la derecha, ya con el pico Izazpikueta a la vista. Al llegar a la altura del WPT “Salida hacia cima, por la derecha // Exit towards summit, on the right”, se sale de la pista para encarar el corto ascenso final

La subida hasta la cima se realiza entre árboles, hayas, robles y castaños. No hay senda marcada, sólo se intuye un rastro de pisadas. La cima no tiene hito ni nada que la identifique pero no tiene pérdida, es el punto más alto. La cima no tiene apenas visibilidad del entorno, por los árboles





El regreso es mucho más sencillo. Desde la cima se retorna a la pista ancha que estábamos siguiendo desde el collado y, posteriormente, todo seguido hasta el pueblo

Esta ruta es sencilla, no tiene grandes problemas de orientación y tampoco tiene grandes pendientes prolongadas. La cima no es muy espectacular pero resulta bonita por lo oscura y escondida que está entre los árboles

El pueblo de Kontrasta merece un paseo, así como la ermita de Elizmendi

It belongs to the Sierra de Santiago de Lokiz. The mentioned mountain range is located between the provinces of Nafarroa to the E. and Araba to the W. The summit that interests us is located to the north of the massif, and belongs to Alava but it is practically in the dividing line between the two provinces

My ascent

This route, short and with little ascent, leaves from the village of Kontrasta. In the village there is no public parking so leave the car where it will not disturb the neighbors. The village is at an altitude of 840 meters, that is why this route has very little accumulated elevation gain

The first part of the route, after passing through a metal gate, consists of the ascent to a col. In the passage of this door there are two very visible roads, with car tracks. One path leads off to the left and the other, to the right. We must take the path that is right between these two, in the middle. It is not as obvious as the other two but it is clearly visible. This path goes up through beech trees on a wide but not very clean track. There are many small branches crossed on the ground, evidencing that this is not a very common route. After a turn to the left (WPT "Cross. Keep on the left"), you reach a new ascending track, wide and very clear to follow, which takes you to the col, at 1030 meters. At the col we continue to the right, with the Izazpikueta peak in sight. When you reach the WPT "Exit towards summit, on the right", you leave the track to face the final short ascent

The ascent to the summit is between trees, beeches, oaks and chestnut trees. There is no marked path, only a trace of footprints. The summit has no landmark or anything that identifies it but you can't get lost, it is the highest point. The summit has hardly any visibility of the surroundings, because of the trees





The return is much simpler. From the top we return to the wide track that we were following from the col and then, all straight back to the village

This route is simple, it does not have big problems of orientation and it does not have long slopes. The summit is not very spectacular but it is beautiful because it is dark and hidden among the trees

The village of Kontrasta is worth a walk, as well as the hermitage of Elizmendi
