Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Peñarroja, de 1067 metros

Modestísima cumbre poco destacada desde el valle (Llanada Alavesa) y cercana al Puerto de Bikuña (1077 m). Se halla totalmente cubierta por el hayedo, quedando el Oeste el Puerto de Okariz (1030 m). Todo ello hace que resulte una cumbre prácticamente sin interés, ni aliciente

Hay que señalar que son varias las cotas que se eleva la sierra de Entzia entre los puertos de Opakua (1020 m) y Bikuña (1077 m), siendo todas ellas modestas y poco destacables. La primera asoma su crestón calizo desde las últimas revueltas de la carretera del puerto. Se trata del Alto de los Corrales de Okariz o Alto del Puerto de Munain (1045 m), si bien no es raro que se encuentre rotulada en algunos mapas como Peña Roja. Se halla coronada por un vértice geodésico bajo el nombre de Puerto de Munain. La siguiente cota se conoce como Peñarroja o Peñarroya (1067 m). Pasando por Zalanportillo o Zerranportillo (1055 m), se alcanza la máxima altura antes de bajar al puerto de Bikuña. Se trata de Txumarregi (1099 m), que es la cima más elevada. De las tres cotas, la más bella y característica es la central (1067 m), que posee un corte rojizo muy característico desde el valle y que valida, entonces, el nombre. En los últimos años se han celebrado homenajes en la misma

Mi ascensión

Entretenida ruta que sale del pueblo de Munain. En el pueblo no hay muchos sitios en los que dejar el coche sin molestar pero hay un aparcamiento en una campa, unos centenares de metros pasado el pueblo. Puede haber grandes mastines cuidando el ganado. Si se acercan, no hay que correr ni mover los brazos. Separarse de los perros y caminar despacio es suficiente para que nos dejen en paz, aunque ladren mucho

Las pistas de esta ruta son, en su mayoría, de tierra y se embarran mucho cuando llueve. Se convierten en charcos y hay que tener cuidado con los resbalones

El ascenso hasta la cima es continuo durante 4.5 kilómetros. Tiene alguna zona de pendiente fuerte pero, en general, se puede hacer tranquilamente sin demasiadas complicaciones. A lo largo del ascenso pasamos por el nacimiento del río Zadorra. Sin ser un sitio espectacular, está horrible por el enorme tubo de plástico que han puesto justo en ese lugar



Todo el ascenso es a través de un hayedo, hasta llegar a la plataforma superior, a unos 1040 metros. Esta zona superior es una zona de pastoreo y existen varias cabañas. Girando a la izquierda, nos dirigimos hacia la cima



La cima propiamente dicha no está junto a la cornisa, como cabría esperar. Está un poco metida hacia dentro, en un pequeño hayedo. En la cumbre existe un hito de piedras y un buzón bastante abollado



Para regresar debemos volver al lugar donde están las cabañas y superarlo. Pasando por la cima de la Punta del puerto de Munáin (1045 m) llegamos al lugar desde donde empezamos la bajada. Parece más difícil de lo que es pero son sólo 360 metros en los que la senda no se ve muy bien. No es difícil orientarse con el GPS. Como punto de referencia está el WPT “Paso de alambrada”, el cual no es muy fácil, por cierto. Al final de ese tramo alcanzamos de nuevo pista cómoda y ancha

Lo queda hasta volver a Munáin es muy fácil y está balizado con postes señalizadores. En varios de ellos se ve que el sentido hacia Munáin es justo el contrario al que llevamos. Eso no significa que estemos yendo mal

En resumen, entretenida ruta en la que es más interesante el trayecto que la cima en sí

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

A very modest summit, not very prominent from the valley (Llanada Alavesa) and close to the Puerto de Bikuña (1077 m). It is completely covered by the beech forest, with the Okariz Pass (1030 m) to the west. All this makes it a practically uninteresting and unattractive summit
It is necessary to indicate that there are several heights that the mountain range of Entzia rises between the passes of Opakua (1020 m) and Bikuña (1077 m), being all of them modest and little remarkable. The first one shows its limestone crest from the last turns of the road to the pass. It is the Alto de los Corrales de Okariz or Alto del Puerto de Munain (1045 m), although it is not uncommon to find it labeled on some maps as Peña Roja. It is crowned by a geodesic vertex under the name of Puerto de Munain. The following height is known as Peñarroja or Peñarroya (1067 m). Passing through Zalanportillo or Zerranportillo (1055 m), the maximum height is reached before descending to the Bikuña pass. This is Txumarregi (1099 m), which is the highest peak. Of the three peaks, the most beautiful and characteristic is the central one (1067 m), which has a very characteristic reddish cut from the valley and that validates, then, the name. In recent years, tributes have been held on the summit itself.

My ascent

Entertaining route that leaves from the village of Munain. In the village there are not many places to leave the car without disturbing but there is a parking in a field, a few hundred meters past the village. There may be large mastiffs guarding the cattle. If they approach, do not run or move your arms. Separating from the dogs and walking slowly is enough to be left in peace, even if they bark a lot

The tracks on this route are mostly dirt and get very muddy when it rains. They turn into puddles and you have to be careful about slipping

The ascent to the top is continuous for 4.5 kilometers. It has some steep areas but, in general, it can be done without too many complications. Along the ascent we pass by the source of the Zadorra river. Without being a spectacular site, it is horrible because of the huge plastic pipe that they have installed just in that place



The whole ascent is through a beech forest, until you reach the upper platform, at about 1040 meters. This upper area is a grazing area and there are several huts. Turning left, we head towards the summit



The summit itself is not next to the ledge, as you might expect. It is tucked inward a bit, in a small beech forest. At the summit there is a stone milestone and a rather battered mailbox



To return we must walk back to the place where the huts are and overcome it. Passing by the top of the Punta del puerto de Munáin (1045 m) we reach the place from where we start the descent. It seems more difficult than it is but it is only 360 meters in which the path is not very visible. It is not difficult to orientate with the GPS. As a reference point is the WPT "Paso de alambre // Wire fence pass", which is not very easy, by the way. At the end of this stretch we reach again a wide and comfortable track

The rest of the way back to Munáin is very easy and is marked with signposts. In several of them we can see that the direction to Munáin is just the opposite to the one we are taking. That does not mean that we are going wrong

In summary, entertaining route in which the trek is more interesting than the summit itself

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
