According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Elabe-Mandio, 1068 meters high
Description of the mountain (extracted from www.mendikat.net):
Although the most recognized summit by the mountaineers is Itxogana (1063 m), about 325 m to the SE is, among profuse trees, the real highlight of the mountain. It is Elabe or Mandio (1068 m), which on old maps is designated with the deformation "Pico el Ave". Obviously the routes are the same for both summits
My ascent
Attractive and fun trail that starts from a parking lot in the forest, next to the town of Gauna
The route runs almost entirely through a huge beech forest and reaches first the top of Itxogana (1063 m) and then Elabe (1068 m), the real goal of this route. Elabe is also known as Mandio
I found it a very fun hike because there are many off-trail sections, walking through the interior of the forest, without any path to follow, orienting only with the GPS. You take and leave many minor or abandoned tracks that do not appear on the maps, totally immersed in the beech forest. Obviously this requires some skill with the use of the GPS and some habit to move off-trail. It is not dangerous at any time because the forest is always open, although there are areas much clearer of undergrowth than others
Halfway up the climb is the hermitage of San Bitor, in a glade in the forest, with a picnic area with tables and barbecues. The Itxogana and the Elabe are very close (400 m) and are only 5 meters apart in altitude. The top of the Elabe is a rock landmark, with the name of the summit but without a letterbox or anything. It is a nice summit, in the middle of the forest, with just some visibility to the ENE
The descent is again an in-and-out of trails, inside the beech forest. In some steep downhill areas you have to try to find a good path because you can't go down just anywhere. It is here where orienteering skills and walking skills in the bush are advisable. This is how the path continues until it reaches the old Basque-Navarre railroad line, which takes us back to the beginning of the route
In summary, nice summit and fun route, for what it has of orientation through forest and off-trail
