Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Somorredondo, de 1077 metros

La cumbre de Somorredondo, como su propio nombre nos viene a decir, es una altura o somo de forma redondeada. Se encuentra en un extremo de la sierra de Lokiz, al pie de la fascinante foz de Izlora. Señalar que esta cima puntuaba en el concurso de los cien años según el catálogo del año 1950, en la posición 164 de los "Montes de Álava"

Mi ascensión

Esta ruta comienza en el bonito pueblo de Orbiso, cerca de Santa Cruz de Campezo. Al final del pueblo, donde comienza la ruta, hay sitio para dejar el coche sin molestar a los vecinos

En general, la ruta me ha gustado mucho. Tiene una primera parte que consiste en ascender a unos 800 metros y caminar a continuación por un tranquilo bosque durante unos 4.7 km, hasta pasar el pueblo de San Vicente de Arana. Este tramo lo que consigue es acercarnos a la cara Norte de Somorredondo. Este tramo es por pista forestal de tierra, cómoda y ancha. Se camina por un bosque que, aun no siendo muy alto, protege bastante del sol. Se pueden ver algunos robles realmente espectaculares



Tras rodear San Vicente de Arana comienza la segunda parte, que es la ascensión propiamente dicha. Es una subida sencilla, por una pista forestal ancha de tierra, protegida del sol por los árboles. La pendiente media es de un 14% aunque los últimos 70 metros justo antes de la cima son más exigentes (30%). Estos 70 metros son sin senda pero la cima es perfectamente visible porque se camina entre algunos matorrales bajos dispersos

La cima es una cumbre herbosa, ventosa, sin arboleda y sin otra decoración que un vértice geodésico. Las vistas son muy bonitas, distinguiéndose los pueblos próximos: San Vicente de Arana (NNO), Oteo (SO) y Santa Cruz de Campezo (S). A un kilómetro hacia el NE, poco más o menos, destaca el monte Txintxularri de 1124 metros





La tercera y última parte es la bajada. No tiene complicación tampoco. Hay que dejar la pista principal en el WPT ” Seguir derecha, abandonando la pista principal” y tomar una senda más estrecha. No es difícil de encontrar porque está marcada con un hito de piedras. En esta bajada se pasa por un canchal que requiere algo de atención



Toda la ruta es sencilla de orientación. Hay desvíos pero no son sendas difíciles de encontrar. Las desviaciones están indicados en los WPTs. El suelo es cómodo de caminar, en su mayor parte, y discurre por zona de sombra. La zona de paso junto a San Vicente de Arana es de asfalto/cemento, unos 1.4 km

The summit of Somorredondo, as its name suggests, is a rounded summit. It is located at one end of the Lokiz mountain range, at the foot of the fascinating Izlora gorge. It is worth noting that this peak was ranked 164th in the "Mountains of Alava" in the 1950 catalogue of the 100th anniversary competition

My ascent

This route starts in the pretty village of Orbiso, near Santa Cruz de Campezo. At the end of the village, where the route starts, there is a place to leave the car without disturbing the neighbors

In general, I liked the route very much. It has a first part that consists of ascending to about 800 meters and then walking through a quiet forest for about 4.7 km, until passing the village of San Vicente de Arana. This stretch brings us closer to the north face of Somorredondo. This section is on a wide and comfortable dirt forest track. We walk through a forest that, although not very high, protects us from the sun. You can see some really spectacular oaks



After surrounding San Vicente de Arana, the second part begins, which is the ascent itself. It is an easy climb, on a wide dirt forest track, protected from the sun by the trees. The average gradient is 14% although the last 70 meters just before the summit are more demanding (30%). These 70 meters are without trail but the summit is perfectly visible because you walk between some scattered low bushes

The summit is grassy, windy, with no trees and no decoration other than a geodesic vertex. The views are very nice, distinguishing the nearby villages: San Vicente de Arana (NNW), Oteo (SW) and Santa Cruz de Campezo (S). A kilometer to the NE, more or less, the Txintxularri mountain of 1124 meters stands out





The third and last part is the descent. It is not complicated either. You have to leave the main track at the WPT "Follow right, leaving the main track" and take a narrower path. It is not difficult to find because it is marked with a stone milestone. On this descent you will pass along a scree that requires some attention



The whole route is easy to follow. There are detours but they are not difficult to find. The deviations are indicated in the WPTs. The trail is comfortable to walk, for the most part, and runs through a shaded area. The passage area next to San Vicente de Arana is asphalt/cement, about 1.4 km
