Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Peñarredonda, de 1079 metros

Son tres pequeñas alturas de similar cota entre la Peña del Cura (1069 m), al Oeste, y Larredez (1104 m), al Este

Mi ascensión

Esta ruta comienza en el pueblo de Egileor. No hay que entrar al pueblo porque el parking está justo a la entrada

Tras un tramo de 1 km por una pista de tierra al descubierto, por fin giramos a la izquierda para entrar en el hayedo, donde comienza la subida que nos llevará a la plataforma superior, a unos 1020 metros de altitud. Esa plataforma es como una balconada sobre el valle de Sakana y en la que hay varias cimas conocidas. La subida es muy sencilla en cuanto a orientación; tiene alguna zona de pendiente media de 28% pero no es nada complicada

La llegada a la plataforma la marca un bonito hito de piedra con dos cruces grabadas en sus caras. Desde allí sólo hay que caminar hacia el Este, pasando por unos puestos de caza de palomas y la Peña del Cura (1069 m). Pocos metros después de la Peña del Cura encontramos un pequeño montículo de rocas que marca la cima de Peñarredonda (1079 m). Desde la cruz grabada hasta la cima se camina por una ladera pedregosa que tiene una suave caída hacia el Sur. Realmente la cima no es una cima como tal sino una cornisa un poco más alta que el terreno circundante. Desde Peñarredonda, al Norte, se domina la sierra de Elgea, el pueblo de Salvatierra y el valle de Sakana, con la ruidosa autovía que va a Pamplona. Si miramos hacia el sur veremos Roitegui y si miramos al SO, Onraita





El descenso se realiza por el mismo camino hasta llegar al WPT “Cruce de rutas”. En este punto dejamos de descender para encaminarnos hacia el Este de nuevo y visitar la cueva de Lezao. Hasta la cueva hay 1.2 km con pendiente positiva del 9%, por una senda no demasiado limpia de maleza. La cueva es una gran oquedad de la que brota agua. Desde la cueva, y ya de camino al aparcamiento, hay que mirar con cuidado porque suele haber habitantes extraños en el bosque. Bosque que, dicho sea de paso, aquí es especialmente precioso





En resumen, bonita y sencilla ruta aunque es más interesante el ascenso y el descenso que la propia cima en sí

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

My ascent

This route starts in the village of Egileor. You don't have to enter the village because the parking is just at the entrance

After a stretch of 1 km on an exposed dirt track, we finally turn left to enter the beech forest, where the climb that will take us to the upper platform begins, about 1020 meters above sea level. This platform is like a balcony over the valley of Sakana and where there are several known peaks. The climb is very simple in terms of orientation; it has some areas with an average gradient of 28% but it is not at all complicated

The arrival to the platform is marked by a nice stone milestone with two crosses engraved on its faces. From there you only have to walk east, passing by some pigeon hunting posts and the Peña del Cura (1069 m). A few meters after the Peña del Cura we find a small pile of rocks that marks the summit of Peñarredonda (1079 m). From the engraved cross to the summit we walk along a rocky slope that has a gentle slope to the south. Actually, the summit is not a summit as such but a cornice a little higher than the surrounding terrain. From Peñarredonda, to the north, we can see the mountains of Elgea, the village of Salvatierra and the Sakana valley, with the noisy highway that goes to Pamplona. If we look to the south we will see Roitegui and if we look to the SW, Onraita





The descent follows the same trail until we reach the WPT "Intersection of tracks". At this point we cease descending to head east again and visit the Lezao cave. To the cave there are 1.2 km with a positive slope of 9%, on a path not too clean of undergrowth. The cave is a large hollow from which water flows. From the cave, and already on the trail to the parking lot, you have to look carefully because there are often strange inhabitants in the forest. The forest, by the way, is especially beautiful here





In short, nice and simple route although it is more interesting the ascent and descent than the summit itself

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
