According to mendikat.net, there are almost 250 mountains of 1,000 meters or more in Alava. This is Mazo, 1083 meters high
Description of the mountain (extracted from www.mendikat.net):
Significant summit of the Artzena/Arcena mountain range on the border with Burgos. This rock forms a clear spur in a N-S direction with characteristic reddish limestone walls cut on the W slope. This spur, which starts in the vicinity of Sobrón (490 m), is topped at its N end by a rocky prow about 50 meters high. A grassy pass (1003 m) links this singular summit with Canto Pero (1201 m)
La Hoz de Sobrón encases the river Ebro in a narrow reservoir limited by rocky walls covered by impenetrable vegetation, on whose mass emerge monoliths where birds of prey rest
Sobrón belongs to the municipality of Lantarón, although it was formerly part of the municipality of Berguenda. It is said that King D. Fávila died in these places in 737, devoured by a bear. In those times there was a village called Lantarón in this area, true cradle of the first County of Álava. Sobrón is currently trying to recover its spa and complete its tourist offer with theme parks dedicated to nature and leisure-adventure
The summit was part of the 1950 catalog of mountains in pos. 105 of the Mountains of Araba, but was deleted from subsequent editions until its reinsertion in 2014
The generic Mazo is widely used to designate summits, mountains along the Cantabrian range. At its peak may well be located the so-called castle of Lantarón, mentioned in the year 897 being Gonzalo Téllez, Count of Lantarón, the lord of those places. On the way up, you will see some steps carved into the rock that give access to the upper plateau of the summit, which looks like a millstone. A little below it is the cave of Peña el Mazo, which provided archaeological remains. This curious cavity presents a gatera (pass for cats) that separates it in, actually, in two, one of them in balcony on the passage of the river Ebro. The name Ojo de Arzena/Artzenako begia, for this accident, is a new invention and is not part of the traditional toponymy
My ascent
Nice and entertaining route to Mazo, 1083 meters. The rocky promontory in the shape of a ship's prow is very characteristic of many peaks in this area
The route starts in the village of Batxikabo, where there is no public parking so you have to find a place to leave the car and not bother. I parked between the bowling and the church
You start walking with hardly any slope for a little more than a kilometer. This stretch is repeated on the way back. It is worth mentioning a cave that there is and that is usually used to keep livestock. When you reach the WPT "Crossroads", the plane ends and the climb begins, which is practically continuous for 2.6 km and with an average gradient of 15%. It is not demanding, not even the 100 m before the top (30%). It is a nice ascent, passing through forests of oaks, pines and boxwoods, on a wide clear track overlooking scattered cliffs
When reaching the elevation of 1000 m there is a point where we leave the wide forest path and turn left, entering the forest. This stretch is about 360 m of narrow dirt path, with little slope, which leaves us on the col at the foot of the huge prow of the Mazo. From the col we walk towards the "stern" of the summit, through a pine forest, leaving the summit to the southwest. Obviously this is to avoid having to climb the huge rock wall
The summit offers great views of the surroundings, especially to the west. There is an original summit letterbox in the form of parabolic antennas. The inscription on the letterbox plaque is obviously wrong as far as the altitude is concerned
The descent has a steep 30% slope in its first 500 m but it is not difficult. The rest of the descent is very pleasant, quiet and restful. There is a very interesting shortcut (see WPT) that saves a lot of trail. There are some ruins of a shack just after the shortcut
In summary, short but very nice route, with stunning views from the top. No complications of orientation or complicated steps
Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
