Alava1000+ 1084 m Cotorrillo

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Cotorrillo, de 1084 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

Cumbre de la sierra de Arkamu cercana a Montemayor (1105 m) que queda al W del portillo de Onzejo (1043 m), quedando esta cumbre, sin embargo, al E del mismo señalizada por un vértice geodésico. En el pasado ha sido frecuente confundir las dos cumbres, pese a que, en realidad, media 1,5 km de distancia entre ambas. Cotorrillo fue puntuable para el concurso de los cien montes del año 1950 en la pos. 54 con una altitud de 1081 m. Los mapas de la época marcan la cumbre con el nombre de Coterrillo

La parte más oriental de la sierra de Arkamu cae en picado sobre el desfiladero de Tetxa abierto por el río Baias. Este angosto desfiladero es tan estrecho que situados en su interior no se divisa apenas el cielo como si se hallase cubierto por un techo, y de aquí el origen del nombre Tetxa, que modifica el término original de Atetxa (Portillo). Sin embargo, el entorno se halla totalmente desfigurado ya que por su interior se ha forzado la intrusión de una carretera, una autopista (A-68) y una vía de ferrocarril, en tan reducido espacio

Mi ascensión

Interesante subida al Cotorrilllo, sobre el desfiladero de Tetxa. El coche hay que dejarlo en el pueblo de Subijana-Morillas, donde no parece haber parking público. Intenta dejar el coche sin que moleste a los vecinos

Tras pasar la iglesia de San Pedro, hay que bordearla hacia el monte, sin senda visible, mientras se asciende por un cerrado bosque. La referencia es no alejarse mucho del borde del desfiladero. Hay pasos en los que los árboles y los arbustos obligan a andar agachado. Es cuestión de orientación por sentido común, buscando los pasos más despejados. A la derecha queda el desfiladero de Tetxa y, del otro lado del desfiladero, la sierra de Badaya y sus aerogeneradores



En la cota de 700 metros se llega por fin a una pista ancha de 4x4, de tierra y rocas planas, de varios metros de ancha y que se aleja del desfiladero. Esta pista hay que seguirla hasta el WPT “Dejar pista por la derecha”. Si se coge este desvío nos volvemos a acercar al desfiladero y nos metemos en otro bosque tupido parecido al que hay después de la iglesia. Este desvío nos devuelve a la pista principal en el punto WPT 2. Existe la posibilidad de no tomar este desvío y continuar por la pista principal hasta WPT 2, pasando por WPT 1. No coger el desvío por la derecha es más cómodo y son sólo 200 metros más de distancia pero es mucho menos divertido

De vuelta a la pista principal, el paisaje se abre mucho. La pista de piedra cambia a un páramo cubierto de hierba sobre la que se distinguen rodadas de vehículos. Hay varios postes indicadores de rutas GR. Este páramo está totalmente descubierto y puede ser bastante fatigoso en un día de fuerte calor. Siguiendo hacia la cima pasamos junto a una sima cuya particularidad principal es que un gran árbol ha brotado casi desde el fondo. Tras la sima y un muro bajo de piedras, llegamos a la cima



La cima es un punto despejado con un vértice geodésico, un pequeño buzón y una cruz de la DYA. No puedo decir si hay vistas interesantes porque este ascenso coincidió con niebla que, sin ser espesa, imposibilitaba disfrutar del paisaje



A la hora de descender, retrocedemos hasta el muro de piedra y lo seguimos hacia el Sur. Se puede ir indistintamente por los dos lados. De hecho, es mejor ir pasándolo de un lado al otro en función de la comodidad del terreno. Se continúa el muro hasta que llegamos a una pista de vehículos 4x4 que nos encamina hacia el fin del recorrido

Summit of the sierra of Arkamu near Montemayor (1105 m) that is to the W of the portillo of Onzejo (1043 m), being this summit, nevertheless, to the E of the same one indicated by a geodesic vertex. In the past it has been common to confuse the two summits, although, in reality, there is a distance of 1.5 km between them. Cotorrillo was eligible for the 1950 Hundred Mountains contest in pos. 54 with an altitude of 1081 m. The maps of the time mark the summit with the name of Coterrillo

The easternmost part of the Arkamu mountain range plummets into the Tetxa gorge opened by the Baias river. This narrow gorge is so constricted that inside you can hardly see the sky as if it were covered by a roof, and hence the origin of the name Tetxa, which modifies the original term of Atetxa (Portillo). However, the environment is totally disfigured since the intrusion of a road, a highway (A-68) and a railroad line has been forced inside it, in such a small space

My ascent

Interesting ascent to the Cotorrilllo, over the Tetxa gorge. The car must be left in the village of Subijana-Morillas, where there seems to be no public parking. Try to leave the car without disturbing the neighbors

After passing the church of San Pedro, you have to border it towards the mountain, without visible path, while ascending through a closed forest. The reference is not to go too far from the edge of the gorge. There are steps where the trees and bushes force you to walk crouched down. It is a matter of common sense orientation, looking for the clearest passes. To the right is the Tetxa gorge and, on the other side of the gorge, the Badaya mountain range and its wind turbines



At an elevation of 700 meters you finally reach a wide 4x4 track, dirt and flat rocks, several meters wide and away from the gorge. This track must be followed until the WPT "Leave track on the right". If you take this detour, you will approach the gorge again and enter another dense forest similar to the one after the church. This detour takes us back to the main track at WPT 2. There is the possibility of not taking this detour and continue along the main track to WPT 2, passing through WPT 1. Not taking the detour to the right is more comfortable and it is only 200 meters more distance but it is much less fun

Back on the main track, the landscape opens up a lot. The stone track changes to a grassy wasteland on which you can distinguish vehicle tracks. There are several GR route signposts. This moor is completely uncovered and can be quite exhausting on a hot day. Continuing towards the top we pass next to a chasm whose main feature is that a large tree has sprouted almost from the bottom. After the chasm and a low stone wall, we reach the top



The summit is a clear point with a geodetic vertex, a small letterbox and a DYA cross. I can't say if there are interesting views because this ascent coincided with fog which, without being thick, made it impossible to enjoy the scenery



When it's time to descend, we backtrack to the stone wall and follow it to the south. It is possible to go indistinctly on both sides. In fact, it is better to go from one side to the other depending on the comfort of the terrain. We continue along the wall until we reach a 4x4 vehicle track that leads us to the end of the trail
