Alava1000+ 1096 m Escaños

Según mendikat.net, en Álava existen casi 250 montes de mil metros o más. Éste es el Escaños, de 1096 metros

Descripción del monte (extraído de www.mendikat.net):

El catálogo de montes de 1950 incluye en su listado de los montes de Araba, en la pos. 64 la cumbre de Escaños, con altitud 1053 m. Los mapas de la época (1939) señalan un supuesto vértice (ED50 30T 501187 4745874)(1055 m), inexistente, en la ladera de una elevación amplia y poco prominente. El término "Los Escaños" es usado para referirse, de forma más o menos amplia, a una parte de la meseta de la sierra de Arkamu, en el entorno de la lobera de Barrón/Barboa. La verdadera cumbre se sitúa a 350 m. al N.NE de aquel lugar y es la que aquí reseñamos

Mi ascensión

Sencilla ruta que sale del pueblo de Artaza, junto a Escota. El pueblo tiene un pequeño aparcamiento con capacidad para 4 o 5 coches

La subida es muy sencilla porque se hace en tres tramos, con zonas de llano entre ellas. Hasta el desvío hacia la cima, la pista siempre es ancha, para vehículos 4x4, de tierra y piedras. No es lo más cómodo para caminar pero no está mal. El entorno es un bosque bastante abierto de carrascas

Al llegar al WPT en el que nos desviamos hacia la cima, nos tenemos que salir de la pista por la izquierda y entrar en una planicie kárstica. No hay senda visible pero es fácil caminar por aquí si se tiene en mínimo cuidado. De la orografía de este lugar posiblemente venga el nombre de la cima porque hay multitud de escalones que pueden asemejarse a escaños. Poco antes de hacer cumbre se pasa junto a una sima marcada con una alambrada

La cima está indicada por un montón de piedras y es el punto más alto de la planicie. Esta cima es todo menos un vértice puntiagudo, apenas destaca sobre el terreno circundante. El día que yo subí había bastante niebla así que no puedo decir nada del paisaje



Ya en el camino de vuelta, existe la posibilidad de desviarse unos metros hasta la lobera de Barrón, lugar donde antaño se hacían batidas para cazar a estos animales. Este tramo tampoco tiene ninguna dificultad de pendiente, suelo u orientación



Tanto si se va a la lobera como si no, el resto del camino hasta volver a Artaza es similar: pista de tierra y piedras, ancha y sin problema

Nota: esta ruta, o parte de ella, es de ida y vuelta. Las indicaciones de los desvíos que se facilitan en el itinerario corresponden a la subida. Es decir, si el WPT marca “Izquierda”, es un desvío a la izquierda al subir, pero a la derecha al bajar

The 1950 mountain catalog includes in its list of the mountains of Araba, in pos. 64, the summit of Escaños, at 1053 m altitude. The maps of the time (1939) show a supposed vertex (ED50 30T 501187 4745874) (1055 m), non-existent, on the slope of a wide and not very prominent elevation. The term "Los Escaños" is used to refer, more or less broadly, to a part of the plateau of the mountain range of Arkamu, in the surroundings of the wolf's nest of Barrón/Barboa. The true summit is located 350 m. to the N.NE of that place and is the one we describe here

My ascent

Simple route that leaves from the village of Artaza, next to Escota. The village has a small parking lot with capacity for 4 or 5 cars

The ascent is very easy because it is done in three stages, with level areas between them. Until the detour to the summit, the track is always wide, for 4x4 vehicles, dirt and stones. It is not the most comfortable trail to walk but it is not bad. The environment is a fairly open forest of holm oaks

When we reach the WPT where we turn off towards the summit, we have to leave the track to the left and enter a karstic plain. There is no visible path but it is easy to walk here if you are at least a little careful. From the orography of this place possibly comes the name of the summit because there are a multitude of steps that can resemble seats (escaños means “seats” in Spanish). Shortly before reaching the summit you will pass by a chasm marked with a wire fence

The summit is indicated by a pile of stones and is the highest point of the plain. This summit is anything but a sharp apex, barely standing out from the surrounding terrain. The day I climbed it was quite foggy so I can't say anything about the scenery



Already on the trail back, there is the possibility of detouring a few meters to the wolfs trap of Barrón, a place where in the past they made raids to hunt these animals. This section also has no difficulty of slope, ground or orientation



Whether you go to the wolfs trap or not, the rest of the trail back to Artaza is similar: dirt track and stones, wide and without problem

Note: this route, or part of it, is a round trip. The indications of the detours provided in the itinerary correspond to the ascent. That is to say, if the WPT marks "Left", it is a detour to the left on the way up, but to the right on the way down
